Best Buy: “Here to screw the customer”

Best Buy being the electronic giant that it is without any real competition has taken it upon themselves to screw their customers as much as possible.  Take for instance an article on The Consumerist which highlights Best Buy at their absolute finest.  The article is an account by a reader of the Consumerist, “Erin” who stumbled upon Best Buys dear love for their customers.  Erin was buying an Insignia Blue-Ray player that was at an awesome price of $169.  Next to the player apparently there was a sign saying the Geek Squad could update the firmware on her player for the low low price of $29.99, lucky her!  Calling B.S. she carried it to the front of the store only to be approached on the subject again by the cashier who stated that she would need the firmware upgraded in order to watch the latest Blu-Ray titles such as Dark Knight.  Again she declined the generous offer and decided to risk it all and do the upgrade herself.  After getting home she did a quick look over of the players I/O and noticed that there wasn’t a phone jack or ethernet port, just a lonely SD card slot.  The further this goes the louder the B.S. meter starts ringing so she calls Insignia CS to get to the bottom of the situation only to find herself back at the beginning as she is informed that Best Buy now handles Insignia’s CS.  After her fruitless journey she pops in the Dark Knight and to her surprise the world does not end and all is still well in the world as it plays just fine without the “firmware upgrade”.  For all of the interested readers, the player in question is an Insignia KM-BRDVD.  Save yourself the money and pass on this fine service from Best Buy.
