RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie: Shoddy products are the “new thing”

In the time of increasingly complex smartphones comes the rise of for potential problems and bugs. In order to combat the rise in problems, development usually starts getting longer and longer in order to release a perfect product. In the wake of the Blackberry Storm’s launch, chat forums around the world are filled with bugs regarding the keyboard (now mostly fixed), software crashes, slowness, and other OS related problems. Despite these problems RIM still made out pretty well and sold over 500,000 Storm’s in the first month. The WSJ speculates that not surprisingly, the early launch problems hampered popularity and sales numbers. So what does RIM have to say for all of this?
Not what you would think. RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie has said that people can expect poorly designed, quickly rushed to market, shoddy smartphones ”complex smartphones” in todays market. Now I don’t know about you but I was always taught to get something done right the first time and make everything perfect. RIM obviously had different parenting. I can’t understand how they can make a comment like that and honestly think it’s OK to release stuff like that. As much as I’m harping on RIM, other manufacturer’s have rushed products to market before…(Apple iPhone 3G). However, Apple apologized many times, slightly different than RIM’s approach of “meh, oh well”. Does this disgust you? Does it change your view of RIM? The way I see it, he is either incredibly bold (no pun intended), or incredibly stupid! Share you thoughts below!
