GSM Palm Pre shown at MWC…details non-existent

It’s no secret that on Palm Pre launch day, there will be lines of people waiting, just as there were for the iPhone and G1.  How long will those lines be?  As long as Apple’s?  Hard to say.  I would have to guess no on as long as Apple’s as Palm just doesn’t seem to have a cult with the same values as Apple’s.  A lot of Palms “cult” doesn’t consist of the young “hipster” crowd but instead of upper 20′s, 30′s…50′s and so on.  Its particularly that older age group that I just don’t see waiting in line for a phone.  Even at Apple’s iPhone launches while there were older folk in line, the vast majority were young youthful bodies.  Back on the topic at hand, the Sprint exclusive on the Palm Pre is sure to keep many Sprint customers from jumping ship while at the same time actually pulling new ones in…something they haven’t been doing so hot at lately.  However, some people either just plain hate Sprint, or have some other type of aversion to CDMA.  Whatever the case may be, GSM loyalists jumped for joy when a UMTS Palm Pre was on display.  Could it be that the GSM world was also going to get the chance at a Pre?

EA trying a new marketing strategy…stop playing video games.

You know times are really tough when the video game industry is selling your “outside” toys because you aren’t buying their “inside toys”.  That’s exactly what EA and Toy Island are doing.  Together they will market a line of outside toys for kids so you can play with the same sports accessories inside and outside.  One cool techie feature is that all of the toys will have motion sensors built in in order to track little Jonny’s playing habits and teach him how t properly hold that club and swing that bat.  Don’t worry about conforming into one or two sports as EA will be offering toys for the following sports: football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and hockey.  For the all around sports super hero, a “Game in a box kit” will be offered that includes everything your little tike’s sports going heart will surely pitter patter over.  Look for these to launch later this year as well as the list of available sports expand.  EA needs to be careful.  Get to popular with this idea and you run the risk of kicking the little boogers off of their 360′s and PS3′s…not exactly the outcome they are looking for, though I’m sure parents disagree.  Whatever the outcome, it is a bold attempt by EA to make a few extra dollars.

AT&T sets lofty goal…LTE 4G by 2011!

In a bizarre though understandable announcement, AT&T revealed MWC that 2011 is the year in which they will launch their own LTE (Long Term Evolution) 4G network.  Considerably later than Sprint’s October 8th launch of their 4G Xohm/WiMax network. A whole 2.5-3 years later.  But hey, who’s keeping track of such trivial things such as time.  Besides, AT&T has much more important things to worry about…you know…more mundane things such as actually building out their 3G network and trying to make it suck a *little* less.  (Please guys, it is too much to ask to actually invest some money into upgrading your junk?)  AT&T seems determined and has stated that their 4G network will bring with it speeds approaching 100mbps!  *Insert zooming sound here*  That’s fast!  While I can certainly enjoy fast, I would much rather see them blanket the country with 3G first then move to a 4G rollout.  The times between 3G and 4G rollout aren’t that great.  We’re going to end up with a huge patchwork of various cellular technologies dotting the country, a little EDGE over here, LTE over there, and some good ‘ol 3G down there.  It will be insane.  Not to mention stuffing another radio into a phone isn’t going to do too much for battery life.  Meh, I guess I should stop worring about this.  We’ve still got time.  Who knows, 20 million hour batteries could be invented within the next 2 years.

MySpace app coming to Palm Pre, Nokia S60

  • February 17, 2009 7:18 pm

MySpace is no doubt a very popular social networking site.  The Palm Pre is Palm’s most hyped and anticipated product ever.  And Nokia just holds a huge share of phone users around the world.  It only seems natural that they all come together and that’s exactly what MySpace revealed today at MWC, that MySpace is brining an app to the Pre and S60 devices.  John Faith, Vice-President of MySpace Mobile was quoted saying ”We are committed to building apps for platforms we feel are groundbreaking to offer our users the best possible on-the-go MySpace experience.”  Besides the dedicated apps, MySpace Mobile’s sites at m.myspace.com and wap.myspace.com are both getting facelifts in order to make them “hipper” and more appealing.  MySpace really needs to step up their game since Facebook is pretty much walking all over them now and in fact has surpassed MySpace in the U.S. as the most trafficked social networking site.  The whole global overtaking was a bit easier strangely as Facebook became the most trafficked social networking site in global terms back in the late summer of ’08.   What will they come up with next?
