VMWare for Mobiles!

Ok put this at the top of your “that’s freakin’ cool” list.  In the many hours of the day that you’re glued to your smartphone, have you ever thought, “You know, I wish I had this other OS running?”  If so, you have a new reason to get excited.  With the ever increasing power and efficiency of mobiles, it was only a matter of time before virtualization made its way to the mobile world.  Well, that day has now come.  VMWare has debuted their MVP Hypervisor mobile OS virtualization software that will let you install and run multiple OS’s just like on a desktop!  Very cool.  Shown above on a Nokia 800 internet tablet clearly shows Windows CE and Android running along side each other.  Now what will this do to increase your efficency or help your day to day work on your mobile?  I can’t think of any earthshattering reason other than how cool it would be to have let’s say the Blackberry OS running along side or “within” Android.  Gizmodo has more on the subject if you’re interested.  Sadly, like I mentioned before, I don’t know if any manufacturers will find this a “must have” feature to license and install on their handsets.  However there’s always hope.

Paragon NTFS 7.0 for Mac: Play on both sides of the OS fence

ntfs-for-mac-7a

If you’re a Mac user and grudgingly had to install Windows on a second partition, I’m sure you’ve run in to a few instances where you’ve been on either the Mac or Windows side and needed access to a file or set of files on the other.  Sadly, neither OS plays nice natively with the other OS’s file system.  So what do you do?  Use an external hard drive, flash drive, or set up a 3rd shared partition that can be read by both?  Well there is an easier was folks.  Paragon has just announced Paragon NTFS 7.0 for Mac essentially giving you two products in one as it will allow you to view files on other partitions without having to reboot in to the OS they are residing on.  For a breakdown of the feature set step inside.

Microsoft bringing the heat to TomTom/Linux

In what is sure to spark mass riots, animal slaughter, and outright apocalyptic events, Microsoft has finally backed up years of talk of “Linux infringing on our patents” and is suing TomTom over their use of a Linux kernel that supposedly does infringe on several patents from Redmond.  Again, while the patent dispute centers around TomTom GPS units, the actual “thing” causing the stink is the Linux kernel inside the GPS units.  The total count for patent infringements…8.  If you’re feeling mighty adventerous check out TechFlash who has the official book full of the dirty details of Microsoft’s claims…25 pages to be exact.  Ok so it’s a small childrens story.  It’s a long read none the less.  Microsoft share holders will cry out saying “Yay, finally we can stand up for being taken advantage of”.  And the Linux faithful will respond with “Sit down and shut up you un-innovative little girl”.  Seems like a fight is about to break out.  And it is going to be a good one!

PSP2 dropping UMD drive…becoming a slider?

“I hear Sony FINALLY has the PSP 2.  And thank goodness, they’ve removed the stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive. I’m excited!”

The very words uttered by David Perry, a developer for the gaming company Acclaim, were posted on his Twitter and Facebook accounts today.  So has Sony given up on the useless UMD format?  Hopefully!  However this is all purely speculation for now as it is one little voice.  Also up on the rumor soap box is the PSP 2 becoming a slider type device while retaining the same internals as current PSP’s.  *Couldn’t they update the guts just a tad…it’s only been several years without any real updates*.  Regardless.  If the PSP 2 looks anything like the render above…Wow is all I can muster up right now.  However with consistent rumors popping up from IGN and VG247 just to name a couple.  The news is certainly a shot of excitement for PSP users as Sony until recently hasn’t really done much at all with the platform.  However, according to Perry, we wont have to wait too long as the PSP 2 could be let loose as soon as this year!  Keep your fingers crossed.

Nokia laptops coming to a lap near you?

If Nokia’s CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo knows what he is talking about when he was quoted saying ”We are looking very actively also at this opportunity, the answer to that could be a “Yes”.  Hmmm, just think, sitting down with your shiny new Nokia laptop and getting onlookers gathering around you wanting to know what this mystery box is.  It really isn’t that far of a stretch seeing as how they already have the whole cellphone thing pretty well down as well as some notable tablet devices.  Stretch the screen out a tad bit more, add a keyboard and you’ve pretty much got a laptop.  While the laptop cat was let out of the bag, sadly the little kitten following that would leak more information out wasn’t so fortunate.  Looks like something we’ll have to follow.

iBluetooth coming soon…making iPhone that much better

  • February 25, 2009 3:14 pm

ibluetooth1

In what is sadly another common feature that has somehow been neglected on the iPhone is bluetooth file transfers.  I can see why Apple left it out (persons at Apple and AT&T think file transferring will hurt downloads and data traffic) but the fact that it is a common feature that every phone should have is a negative in my book.  However, those of you who are willing to jailbreak will soon be able to get your hands on iBluetooth, developed by “MeDevil” is an application that will allow you to transfer files over bluetooth!  Just like everyone else since 2002!  Obviously, since things of this sort are prohibited by the SDK rules, Cydia will be the app store of choice.  As soon as it’s ready I’ll let you know.  More pictures of iBluetooth inside.
