MySpace goes on a much needed diet

If you are a more seasoned individual who is still relatively young, you may heard of a social networking site called MySpace.  Even though MySpace isn’t garnering all of the media attention lately, (that honor goes to Twitter and Facebook), it is still none the less a big player in the social networking scene as it was the first social networking site to truly make that type of “thing” cool.  Throughout the years, MySpace’s emphasis on customization has rendered many of its hundreds of millions of profiles so complex and flashy that individuals on slower less than broadband speed connections have to take a day off from work just to check their profile.  This will no longer be the case.  How So?

Seems as if the fine owners of MySpace have realized that while the customization is great, so is being able to actually open a profile page on a slow connection in under ten minutes.  In order to make it more slow people friendly, MySpace is adding a “MySpace Lite” tab on the top right of each page that will allow you to view a stripped down (hence the word “lite”) version of the page.  Gone are most if not all of the flashy cascading text, music, vidoes, stupid polls, etc. etc.  Instead you can now actually see the information about the person owning that particular profile.

After looking at the picture above, one can see that when viewing in lite mode, MySpace takes on a very Facebook-ish appearance in that everything is surprisingly organized and well layed out.  Could this be a hidden tactic of theirs to try and appeal to a more mature audience who has grown weary of the flash and eye candy that they once enjoyed at ages of lesser numbers?  I think it’s a combination of both.  A new version of the site for the individuals with slower connections as well as those without the want nor stomach to handle all the crap that has crept onto MySpace profiles today.

So after seeing how it looks does it have you hooked?  Even if you like all of the flash and pizzaz would you browse in Lite mode more often just to get stuff done quicker without going into an epileptic seisure?  Will disgruntled MySpace users stage a million man protest as to the changes as they fear that they could one day creep into a mandatory change to all of MySpace?  (Don’t worry, I don’t see them dumping all of the custom touches as that is what makes MySpace “MySpace”).  If they did do that and tried to compete head on with Facebook, I think they would die a quick death.

Enough of my blabbing…what are your thoughts?
