Mobile web browsing has become one of the most talked about areas of the mobile market with mobile browsers on cell phones constantly being made more of a prominent feature. On the mobile front, cellular providers are also hyping up their transitions in the near future to faster, more efficient 4G networks. Usually when we talk of 4G networks we then follow up with comments about devices that we dream about to take advantage of said networks and how they would look. But what if you have been carrying around a 4G device in your pocket for the last 1-2 years? Truth is you have. *Gasp*
Thanks to KT, a Korean Cellular provider, lucky Korean users of KT will be able to enjoy 4G quite soon as they announced today the arrival of their next gen service and started with the revealing of the “Egg”, a sort of “modem” device that makes use of a WiBro connection that piggy backs over WiFi connections. It is also being described as “WiFi on steroids”. For those of you wondering, WiBro is a cousin if you will of WiMax, the often talked about (dying?) technology in the U.S. The best part about the Egg is the speed, and the device that has been revealed that it will support: 37Mbps and the iPod Touch.
Yes, you read that right. Apple’s little touchscreen iPod will soon be able to be transformed into a 4G powerhouse. In the not too distant future, we might even be able to purchase the Egg in Apple stores across the world as they will soon be available in Apple Stores in Samseong-dong and Myeong-dong, Seoul this May. Those of you who don’t like fruit, particularly apples, can take comfort in knowing that other devices will be able take advantage of the Egg’s hotspots. The final smile inducing feature – the price. While straight out of the box it will cost you 220,00 won ($164), if you sign up for KT’s data plan you can walk out the door with a shiny new *FREE* Egg. Certainly not a bad deal at all, especially one to get your early 4G on. Don’t you think? As 4G deployment gets more momentum, the Egg and devices like it will help bring 4G to the masses and ensure it has a popular and wide acceptance.
