The Motherboard Mirror reveals how geeky your really are

If there was ever a time when you realized you were truly a geek, a nerd, or all out hysterical nut, upon purchasing this item, your entrance into that realm may have just begun.  The Motherboard Mirror is as the name states, a mirror designed and modeled after a motherboard.  What sets this unique mirror apart from other mirrors with designs and etchings on them, is that the etchings in the motherboard mirror are made on the glass slab itself, not the mirror surface, meaning you can’t actually touch and feel the design on the mirror.  For the true electronic/circuit loving aficionados, the Motherboard Mirror may be just the item to add to your collection that comes in rectangular, square, or circular shapes.  However, good luck finding one as they are an extremely limited item that will surely never make it into your house, destined for lives in museums.

Heidi Klum: “LG’s Ambassador of Style”.

If one thing could ever help cell phone accessory sales, it would be marketing said accessories behind a super model.  Yes, it is true that in the U.S., one of the best ways to sell something is having an extremely attractive woman behind it.  Something about that method causes men to practically throw their wallets at whatever company is selling the product.  The product in question today is custom designed backplates for the LG Rumor 2 designed by none other than Heidi Klum herself.  The backplates, so far 5 in total, she says are “designed after her own expressions of style”.  While celebrities aren’t always the greatest book of knowledge when it comes to celebrities, as in knowing all the ins and outs of certain brands and  policies and choosing a gadget/electronic simply because it’s cool, this particular match up is one that should please many regardless of their position on the issue.  The backplates can be picked up at any Spring U.S. retail store for $9.99.  Is some thin plastic and Heidi Klum’s expression enough to open your wallet to the tune of $9.99?

Be the cool geeky kid with the Lego Flash Drive

Continuing on with their gadget revolution, Lego is kiddie-cizing another popular and well known electronic, the flash drive.  While the scores of office/electronic products Lego is marketing to the electronic crowd is a great nostalgic idea to bring any adult back to their childhood of endless hours playing with Legos, I don’t think charging $54.95 for a paltry 2GB is the best way of going at it.  Some will be more enamored with the Lego styling that the capacity limitation isn’t even a thought in their minds.  They just want that Lego!  For others, they will pass by this novelty in search of more “grown up” devices that offer a tad more storage for your buck.  What about you?  Is the Lego Flash Drive in your budget?  The drives can be purchased over at 123 smile’s Etsy shop.

Start the high speed party early…get your USB 3.0 cables now!

So USB 3.0 controllers and hardware won’t be available for at least another year, that isn’t going to stop the forward thinking techno freak that could be you!  Such trivial problems such as no software or secondary hardware to support a different piece of hardware is going to set back the true electronic guru.  No sir.  For those individuals, USB fever has your back.  They are  selling 2 meter long USB 3.0 cables for $9.99.  We all know that USB 3.0 is much faster than USB 2.0, ten times faster to be exact.  However, without the hardware, it’s merely an over glorified USB 2.0 cable.  Anyone biting yet?

Nvidia GT3xx cards to be the end all be all of seperate CPU/GPU’s

Processors and graphics cards have long been two completely different monsters that have each had their own respective duties, never switching sides.  As with all electronics, stand alone parts are often integrated into one as technology progresses and becomes smaller.  For years, many computer nerds have dreamed of the day when the CPU and GPU can become one, sharing roles, and making your scream machine all the faster, while also being smaller and more efficient.  Nvidia’s GT3xx series cards could be just that and is even been called a cGPU.  A cGPU because it will start to march into Intels territory in the whole processor arena.  Being hailed as the “first truly new architecture since SIMD (Single-Instruction Multiple Data)”, the architecture changes coming with the 3xx series could be the prelude (as in one to two generations away from the full blown thing) to the CPU/GPU combo we have been waiting for.  While another several years seems like an eternity, and to many techno people really is, it is but a drop in the bucket to the last thirty years or so of computer evolution.  Computers, computer components, and computer performance are on the brink of exploding exponentially in terms of speed, efficiency, and power.

Copying CD’s = Fair Use — Copying DVD’s = illegal?

dvds

The “war against piracy” quest for record/movie label companies to pad their pockets is by far the biggest sham in the world today.  Case and point: the ongoing battle of copyright holders and RealDVD over the legality of the RealDVD software.  The copyright holders claim that RealDVD violates copyright laws because it circumvents DVD encryption to allow customers to make “unlawful” copies of their legally purchased content.  Explain to me how copying a legally purchased movie of your own is illegal.  It’s yours.  Back off!  Explain to me how it is different than back in the day of copying VHS tapes.  Granted, I know copying a VHS tape takes time, and you can only distribute those physically meaning there is a certain limit to the amount you can distribute at one time.  Whereas a DVD being digital, one copy can instantly be available to millions of people.  Still, making copies for yourself is completely legal.  If the RealDVD loses the trial and is deemed illegal, expect DVD ripping software everywhere to go down.  However, I also see a sharp increase in the amount of DVD ripping software downloaded as disgruntled consumers push back.  If backing up and ripping your own property becomes illegal as deemed by the copyright holders and court systems, why not just start pirating movies and stop paying for legal movies to copy?  Why not just totally go underground and cut off the cash flow to the copyright organizations and labels?  I mean if you’re going to be breaking the law simply ripping you own DVD, you might as well download a pirated movie as well.  Is this really what these organizations want?  The outcome, whatever it may be, will certainly have far reaching effects in the digital/technology industry.  Will the industry and consumers be forced into illegal means to do something that should be legal in the first place, or will the label and copyright industry finally realize that embracing technology and consumer choice is the road that should be traveled?

No worries…Apple DID NOT layoff 1,500 employees

  • April 25, 2009 2:09 pm

apple

With all the focus on the economy and companies announcing layoffs left and right, many were surprised with the latest news that has been floating around of Apple themselves letting go of a reported 10% of their work force.  In the great excitement that the announcement caused, many people have simply misunderstood what the numbers meant.  Apple reported 14,500 “full-time equivalents” at the end of March – not 14,500 employees.  For many, they’ll interpret full-time equivalents as employees, however, FTE is merely an accounting term used to calculate “man-hours”, not employees.  While Apple has been letting some people go, it is no where near 1,500.  So, your fears can subside as Apple isn’t in that bad of shape.  Happy Saturday folks.
