Take a gander at your local mp3 player/PMP department at your local best buy and you will see every type of style of player you can think of under the sun, all under one roof. While there are a ton of players to choose from, there really isn’t that much differentiation between the various models. You could in fact say the MP3/PMP player market is saturated. So what does a device like the Atree J2 PMP bring to the market that we haven’t seen before?
Nothing. Well, if you like red LED lights, (on the Atree J2 oddly named the “Red Eye”) set against a not so stunning blue scalloped background, then the Atree J2 may in fact be for you. The rest of the rather unexciting spec list includes support for MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, APE and FLAC formats on the audio side while AVI, MPEG4 and WMV formats will happily chug along at a brisk 30fps on the video end of things. Watching all of those movies might be a tad tiring considering the screen is a rather small and now oudated 320 x 240 TFT screen. But, remember, at one point that was huge – my how times have changed. Also included with the Atree are a 5.1 virtual surround sound mode, integrated FM tuner, and a Korean-to-English dictionary, (you know, just incase you happen to be learning Korean). If the Red Eye and Korean dictionary are enough to make you rip out your wallet in sheer joy, be ready to plunker down $93 for the 4GB model and $112 for the 8GB model. And bringing up the back end of the feature set comes by way of microSD card support if 8GB just isn’t enough for your your digital goods. Those wanting some more visual experience, don’t worry, I didn’t forget you.
