If you happen to care about cable specs at all, you may want to sit up and take notice as HDMI 1.4 specs have been revealed and with them come reason for celebrating and crying all at the same time. With the introduction of the next generation/spec of HDMI comes some pretty far reaching changes that are sure to affect users further down the road. So what exactly is the good and bad news?

To start of with the good news first would be so unoriginal, so, I’m going to bring you down nice and hard from the get go. The perils that are to come with HDMI 1.4 center around HEC (HDMI Ethernet Channel). In order to use this new technology, you will have to have a 1.4 spec cable as previous generations and specs will not work. Also, adding fuel to the fire and chances for cable manufacturers to screw us over even more in regards to grossly overpriced cables, HDMI 1.4 cables will come in two versions – low and highspeed versions. Say it ain’t so folks. Monster Cable philosophy is infiltrating all of us whether we like it or not.

The good news, now that we’ve already partially revealed it is of course the arrival of HEC. With HEC, HDMI devices will be able to connect and communicate over the wonderful world web all through the HDMI ports that have been staring at your wall for many years now. Further future proofing itself, HDMI 1.4 also brings with it support for resolutions up to 4,096 x 2,160 pixels at up to 30Hz thanks to Automatic Content Enhancement or “ACE meaning the next gen of super hi-def video should flow quite nicely along these new age cables. Are you a bit disturbed by the lack of backwards compatibility and or the fact that now cables have tiers? The latter is definitely a reason to find another cable standard such as…Display Port. You game?
