Speed demons and multimedia hounds who currently waste vast amounts of time waiting for data to transfer to and fro between USB 2.0 devices will soon have a much faster method. While the USB 3.0 specs were finalized a distant 6 months ago, any actual hardware to support the new specs were still MIA, that was until now. Thanks to NEC and their µPD720200 USB 3.0 controller chip that will support speeds of up to 5Gbps, transfer times will be drastically reduced as it will soon be making its way into consumer electronics devices giving us often wasted minutes of our lives back. USB 3.0 is fully backwards compatible with older 1.0 and 2.0 devices so bleeding edge tech users need not fret about backwards compatibility issues. Look for device manufacturers to start pushing these out in early 2010!
