Twitter user base: 90% of activity comes from only 10% of users

If you would have to throw out a half hazard guess as to the ratio between Twitter activity and actual contributing users was, forgetting the title, what would you say? 50/50? 40/60? 30/70 at worst? If you guessed any of those ratios you were wrong. In a Harvard Business Review, a troubling Twitter fact came to light – of all the Twitter activity that goes on each and every day, a paltry 10% of users are responsible for creating and tweeting 90% of that content. Seems as if Twitter has a bunch of free loaders/spam accounts doesn’t it? Not to mention, the fact that a mere year or so ago, if you had 6-7,000 followers you were huge. Now with celebrity after celebrity joining the micro-blogging service in order to become “popular” you’ll need at least 250,000+ followers. Twitter’s growth and fame are moving at break neck speeds. This fast growth will at some point level out. And when it does, what will the Twitter captains do in order to keep profit flowing in and their site/service relevant? So, are you the 90 or the 10?
