Don’t even try to hide the fact that you, like most everyone else love the freedom. (Duh). In regards to the oh so popular iPhone/3G, the Dev-Team has finally released the ultrasn0w software package that will free your iPhone from it’s carrier shackles. All you have to do is jailbreak your phone using redsn0w or Pwnage Tool 3.0, go to Cydia or Icy and add the repo: repo666.ultrasn0w.com , and finally search for ultrasn0w. Install said package, reboot your phone and get ready to enjoy the freedom that life was meant to bring. Oh, by the way, T-Mobile users should disable 3G before the unlocking goes down! Happy Unlocking.

**Anyone who is using ultrasn0w, are you having any luck SIM swapping with a BlackBerry and actually getting the data on the iPhone to work?

Ensure your camping trips are full of green and white LED light

  • June 22, 2009 1:46 pm

solarcap

The whole idea of going camping (usually) is to get away from it all. The city life, a fast paced world, electronic distractions, and other gadgetry are abandoned as campers aim to reconnect with nature and enjoy being self sufficient. However, one of the slightly problems with living in mother natures grassy fields is that light…after dark….is rather scarce. Instead of fumbling with a flashlight or some other lantern, why not capture the light from the sun and reuse it later? That is what the Solar Cap aims to do. Featuring a brim with embedded solar cells as well as LED lights built into the underside of the bill of the cap, night reading and other night related activities can now be carried on with a more friendly and efficient hands free approach. While an initial 3 day charge is needed to get the solar cells up and running, fret not as after the initial charge, a mere 8-hour jaunt is all that is needed to top off your Solar Cap. After juicing the hat to the max, users of said hat can expect roughly 5 hours of run time. Enough to get you through many chapters of your favorite book, or enjoy a nice, long night walk with up to a 30 foot reach. Finally, the Solar Cap is a fully weather proof hat meaning no matter the elements, you can enjoy clean, renewable light at any time of day.

Hey, being green is finally getting more affordable. At $50, the Solar Cap isn’t a bad investment at all. Go Green!

Powerline based Internet just got a bit snappier

  • June 22, 2009 1:18 pm

Belkin-HD

While Cable, DSL, and even Satellite receive the bulk of media attention, a lesser known though still perfectly capable transmission method lurks in the shadows — powerline based internet. Powerline based internet is exactly what it sounds like, internet/data transmitted through power lines which in turn get transmitted throughout the electrical in your house. Up until Belkin’s new “Powerline HD”, the only real sacrifice you had to make was that of speed as powerline based internet topped out at 200Mbps. Speed is finding a new home however as Belkin’s Powerline HD brings the new speed limit to a much more respectable though overkill for most meager civilians, 1000Mbps. Now, as always, these numbers are theoretical maximums that can be influenced by a number of things, most importantly faulty or outdated wiring. Still, if you are fed up with the monopolistic and sub-par internet service that traditional DSL and cable based providers have been providing, now may be more appropriate than every to give network-over-powerline internet a chance. Is $150 too much?

Bing Mobile just a rebadged Live Search?

  • June 22, 2009 11:27 am

bing-mobile

From the screenshots above and below, one might come away thinking that the up and coming Bing Mobile is nothing but a *very slightly* freshened up Live Search with a nice new logo and name slapped on it. And at first glance they’d be right. However, while some will knock the rather “old” look that has been around for some time now, functionally speaking, Live Search was not a bad app or service at all. You all know the saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. It seems that is the approach Redmond is taking with Bing Mobile. Furthermore, Live Search featured voice search and location based support quite some time before Google did meaning Microsoft is completely behind the times.

Online Journalism Then. Online Journalism Now.

online-ad

I’m sure many of you get your daily dose of news from some form of digital means, eschewing the now archaic and grossly inefficient paper based model. Why spend countless minutes searching through pages of slaughtered trees when you can have an unlimited amount of papers available to you online, at your finger tips? So is the way of the world. Unfortunately, as more readers move online, ad revenue from traditional paper papers continues to fall meaning the publishers have to find new methods of making money. Sadly, it has taken the form of ad after ad and the continual downsizing of actual content per page. While I whole heartedly support ad usage, having more ads than worthwhile content isn’t a very good business model to attract readers and entice them to open up their wallets. The picture above comes compliments of Microsoft program manager Dare Obasanjo and shows just how much online journalism has changed in a few short years, albeit with an obvious twist of humor thrown in. Still, it is very clear the problems that online journalism still face in that they are clearly outside of their comfort zone and have no idea what they are doing. Ahhh, ’tis nice to reminisce.

The ultimate love: BlackBerry and Cake

  • June 22, 2009 9:54 am

bb-cake

I won’t lie, I love gadgets, particularly my BlackBerry. After a recent stint with an iPhone, i realized a lot of the shortcomings of the little device, but also realized how much it has going for it. Besides gadgets, I have a massive sweet tooth. It would makes sense then to somehow combine the two. But how? Introducing the BlackBerry Storm Smart Cake. While it isn’t my favorite BlackBerry to date, the concept is a novel one at that. What better way to rack up another year on the belt-’o-life than devour an imitation of a several hundred dollar device? Hopefully my wife will pick up on subtle clues I hint along the way as a BlackBerry cake of my own would be quite the birthday treat. Are you suddenly eager to face plant into a bowl of sugar?

Stupidity gets materialized into a new useless gadget: The PETA approved bug catcher

  • June 22, 2009 9:43 am

fly-catcher

While I could give two s**** about PETA, their policies that put animals before humans, and their plain lack of common sense, I figured it would be a good idea to show you fine readers exactly what their “PETA-approved” bug catcher looks like…just in case you were wondering. After all of the big news outlets kept focusing on the “story” of President Obama swatting and killing a fly (fight the good fight), PETA responded by sending him a fly catcher that was more humane than killing the poor creature. Nevermind the fact the massive amount of diseases these pests carry, their incredibly short lifespan, or their utter uselessness in the numbers we have them today. So, after all the commotion has finally died down, what do you think of this bug catcher? Is it a big waste of $8 that needlessly goes to the biggest terrorist group known to mankind (read between the lines: PETA), or do you honestly feel for the poor little disease carrying, human annoying flies? The few bad flies are giving all the good ones a bad rep….
