Apple App Store rejections hit new low

It’s been several weeks since I’ve had a good post highlighting one of Apple’s oh so intelligent App Store rejections. After hearing out this latest rejection, you may be moved to pick up your rocket launcher and pitchfork and start marching with the masses….or not. Without further delay, it all revolves around karaoke, iKaraoke that is. Sad app was rejected because it apparently too closely resembles the iPod apps own functionality. OooooRLY? First off, a little alarm should be ringing in your head as the iPod doesn’t yet have a Karaoke feature. Just wait, it gets better…

After getting to and over that little mishap, the developer was also told that because iKaraoke would download and manage music files outside of iTunes, the app could and probably would confuse users. Right, because there aren’t any other apps that Apple has approved that manage files without the help of iTunes. Start those digits a countin’.

And then the ludicrousy hits an all new level or ludicrousness. Just mere hours ago, as in this morning (July 2nd, 2009), Apple filed a patent for new iPod features. If you’re thinking what I think you’re thinking, you are correct. The new features and patent concern Karaoke features for the iPod app that among other things, “monitor the pitch of a user’s voice”.

So, lets recap. Apple rejects Karaoke app because it (1) looks too much like a so far unreleased and more than likely undeveloped iPod add-on feature, (2) does something that countless other iPhone apps do — manages files without the help of iTunes, and finally, (3) Apple releases their own patent after the developer has spent months on his iKaraoke app.

Apple is clearly paving the way for their own in-house supreme dominance. Does this tactic leave you with a sour taste in your mouth at all? You know, I wonder just what we would write about if Apple stopped making such boneheaded moves. I guess what the real question is, would you even want to do karaoke on your phone?
