iPhone OS 3.1 to drop before end of July? [Rumor]

With numerous iPhone 3G/S overheating horror stories popping up over the web, tales of slugishness with this new found 3.0 software, and overall bugginess, one would think Apple would want to get on it and issue a fix ASAP. And that is exactly what Apple is doing. Leaked images of beta builds of iPhone OS 3.1 have been making their way around the web the last couple of days bringing with them numerous fixes and enhancements. One recent security hole that was found involving malicious code sent through SMS messages may actually spell out the release date of OS 3.1…

The claimed security hole was found by security researcher Charlie Miller, co-author of The Mac Hacker’s Handbook and involves a security hole in which a hacker can send malicious code through an SMS message and take over the receiving iPhone. The consequences aren’t pretty and include data theft, turning on the mic to eavesdrop on conversations, tracking of the phone by GPS, and even making the phone phone join a distributed denial of service attack or a botnet says Miller.

He stops short of actually going into any great detail about the security hole in agreement with a request by Apple. However, come later this month at the Black Hat USA conference in Las Vegas, all bets are off as Miller is free from his Apple owned shackles. Why so?

That’s where the real treat lies. According to Miller, Apple is releasing an update to plug this whole that he claims will be released by the end of this month…before Black Hat. Now, if you’re issuing an update that large, but waiting a good 3-4 weeks, certainly some other updates must be in order. Could this be the iPhone OS 3.1 update that has been spied, eyed, and lusted after the last few days? I would reckon so. It wouldn’t make sense for Apple to issue an update for just that. Granted, that is a pretty major problem that needs to get patched ASAP!

So what do you think. 3.1 b4 /july?
