Normally under real copyright law, a takedown should be issued only if sales would be directly, negatively affected, the content in question is misleading, or the content is being marketed as original content from someone other than the original creator. Now, how does a damn cat playing a keyboard embedded into Hall & Oats break any of this? It doesn’t! There’s nothing wrong with it. If anything this will hurt Warner Music as the comments left on YouTube underneath the movie aren’t exactly inviting them over for dinner. “I hate you”, “you suck”, and “die” are pretty much the general message pissed off viewers are leaving for dear ‘ol Warner. Heck, a simple google of “Warner Music Sucks” displays a pretty revealing story on what the world really thinks of them.
When will these exec’s of music labels finally get that they are not entitled to everything. Copyright doesn’t ensure entitlement to every single thing based off of your copyrighted content. Copyright is for improving innovation, not limiting competition. Limiting competition is now the only thing copyright is good for. More and more we are seeing individuals and companies using copyright to simply stop competitors from bringing out something better than their own. Great for them, terrible for the consumer.
Speak with your wallets and your voices. Whether it be leaving a comment on the Keyboard Cat’s YouTube page, writing Warner Music Group a nice little letter telling them how much the world loathes them and wish they would disappear into the ninth circle of hell, or simply applaud them for being a helping hand in ruining the music industry. Of course, feel free to improvise and add your own stuff in. It makes it more personal.
