Driven: “Snapped”

  • August 26, 2009 9:06 pm

Following the drumming God from South Africa, I’ll begin to head down a different path. A path that hits a little closer to home in fact. Any musician who regardless if they’ve made it big or not, has a deep love and understanding of local music and the support needed when a “big night” consist of a crowd in the 3 digit range. While the ultimate goal of any local band is to become famous, the one thing that should never leave priority spot number 1 is that of good music. The term “good music” is debatable and subjective from person to person. However, no matter the genre, local music is almost like a sort of school pride in that those who follow the band are proud of them, the music they make, and the humble origins from which they originated.

So, the highlight of the “local music” video for the evening is from my favorite local band here in South Bend, Indiana — Driven.

Bomfunk MC’s: Freestyler – Played by Cobus

So far I’ve highlighted bands that are in the mainstream and enjoy wide success in multiple countries. Again, we all know one of my loves is that of gadgets. And now, you all know a second is music. Building on that love for music is the love I have for the drums. I myself have been playing for 7 years, though, because it has been off and on at times since I still haven’t been able to get my own drum set, I can’t even begin to compare to Cobus, a remarkably talented drummer from Humansdorp (off the Eastern Cape of South Africa) who’s only been playing a few years yet surpassed me long long ago haha. Someday I hope to be at least 1/2 as good as he is. Enough talking, sit back and relax this video he put together. If you are into drums or drumming, you can surely appreciate the magic that is taking place before your eyes. Enjoy!

Alter Bridge: Broken Wings

Alter Bridge. Whether you knew them before or after they made the switch from Creed, you surely know the potential they had. With Myles Kennedy that potential was unleashed. While many will surely disagree, I find Alter Bridge, and more importantly, Myles Kennedy to have one of the best voices for someone in this genre. He has range, power, and control (most days). With heavy hits such as “Ties that Bind” to amazing rock balads such as “Blackbird” (my personal favorite) to more mainstream favorites such as “Broken Wings”, Alter Bridge has quite a variety of music that is sure to suck you in.

The funniest iPhone commercial you’ll ever see. Period.

While I use an iPhone, the honeymoon phase is long gone. While the OS is still my favorite in terms of speed, ease of use, and eye candy, the hardware, BS policies of both Apple and AT&T, and god awful coverage where I live mean I’m looking elsewhere. Still, I more or less like the little guy. Some of you however are sick and tired of hearing about Apple this and iPhone that. You wish they’d both drop of the face of the planet in a fiery ball of death. The day you can wake up, go through the day and long into the night and never hear “there’s an app for that” is the day you shave your head, join a monastery and donate your life savings to *insert favorite charity here*. Ok…maybe not that extreme, but you get what I mean. For all of you….this video, is for you.

If you thought your were clever or technologically relevant with your modded to the teeth home PC, step aside and let a true geek/modder step forward. A Finnish resident must have been bored several days in a row and decided to push the limits of miniaturization and ingenuity. Just how did he accomplish this feet? Simple, he took an old Mobira Talkman cell phone kit and stuffed a complete Windows Media Center PC into it. More info, pics, and a movie right inside.

We are the fallen: “Bury me Alive”

  • August 26, 2009 8:32 am

You may remember back a few months ago I wrote about a new band called “We are the fallen”. Bands come and go everyday. However, the way this particular band is planning on marketing themselves and connecting with the public is in stark contrast to many bands/labels and their sue first, continue to stall innovation, and apply old business models to new technology. I figured that since I will start adopting music/tech related news into my normal allotment of gadgets and other digital goodies, why not add this band, whom is embracing technology in an increasingly digital age to the list of videos to check out.

One other tidbit that shoehorned We Are The Fallen into my new music spot on the site is that you can actually embed their content — something that some other bands and pretty much all record labels feel will rob them of precious dimes and nickels. If you idiots only knew…

Hope you enjoy it!

Which 15 U.S. states rank supreme in broadband speeds?

15-top-us-broadband-speeds
Internet junkies and most gadget freaks have a border line addiction when it comes to being connected. Naturally, in the age we live in with quickness and efficiency being constantly rammed into our heads, we want whatever it is we’re searching for on the digital frontier to arrive on our computers fast…instantly even. While we all know that the U.S. is sorely lacking when it comes to broadband speeds compared on a global level, with our friends across the big blue pond enjoying the upper double digits routinely, who gets to claim bragging rights here in the states? As you can see from the list pictured, the digital playland, California, isn’t number one as many would assume. Instead, the land silicon comes in at a rather low 11th place nationwide. Instead a cluster of smaller north eastern states such as Delaware, Rhode Island, New York, and Massachusetts make up the top four.
