Local governments worldwide may decry the use of photo enforcement is solely for added public safety. However, the increase in said usage at a time when the global economy is doing a downward tango isn’t exactly a very convincing alibi. While computers may have certain advantages over us, it is the almighty human brain that can find loopholes in laws, contracts, and other binding commitments that computers just can’t handle yet. Case in point: Dave Vontesmar of Pheonix Arizona.

A stretch of road between Interstate 17, Arizona 51, and Interstate 10, also known as the “Photo-enforcement gauntlet” because of the insane amount of photo cameras being used. The cameras in question have up through July of 2009, generated upwards of $20 million in revenue. Facts, charts, and other persuasive propaganda aside, the first thing any normal citizen thinks when the see that monetary amount tied to photo enforcement cameras is “highway robbery”. The man named above, Dave Vontesmar feels much the same and has decided enough was enough. His solution? A monkey mask.

The law backing up the photo cameras along the photo-enforcement gauntlet state that once a motorist is identified, a ticket is issued and the motorist has 30 days to pay the fine. Those wishing to contest such tickets have the option of sending in the ticket along with a copy of their drivers license. In the case of Dave’s now 30+ tickets he’s accrued, the person, or more literally, animal driving his car has thrown a monkey wrench in the wording of the law. Dave argues that since those issuing the ticket can’t properly identify the driver (as it obviously doesn’t match his license), he isn’t paying.

Such acts of defiance rarely stand up in a legal court system. However, the rebel in me cheers Dave on as photo enforcement cameras are one of the greatest scams of the digital age. Many will agree, though conversely, many will also disagree so to each his own. However, here we care about the little guy, the consumer, the citizen(s) whose rights are being abused. We cheer you on Dave. Godspeed.
