Centrl for iPhone [Review]
Since I don’t live in a large city full of exciting stuff to do, social networking apps and those that are aware of your surroundings haven’t really piqued my interest yet for the simple fact that there isn’t really a shred of information or “goods” for my little town in northern Indiana. However, that hasn’t stopped me from dipping my toe in the pool from time to time. Loopt is popular social networking application that aims to bring users who live near and far together, sharing places of interest, and fostering a good time. If you are in fact in to the social networking scene and love informative apps such as Loopt, another option, “Centrl”, is worth a look.
So what exactly do you do with Centrl? Pretty much whatever you’d like to do is fair game. Walk around, meet new people, friend them, chat, mark places of interest, etc. The sharing of information and ideas is what builds strong networks and relationships and after playing with Centrl extensively for the last 12 hours, is actually fun….even in Podunk, USA. While I am new to Centrl, Centrl itself is not. Though, a new update does make it even more of a contender to other popular apps such as Loopt than ever before. New features such as:
- New Profile Pages:Profile pages automatically created for all users. Content backs up locations of interest. Per Centrl:
Find a great bar and want to share it with friends? Using Centrl from your iPhone, you can mark the bar as a favorite place, upload a photo, add a comment, and post a link to Twitter. Centrl will instantly create a profile page that displays the bar’s location, your photo, comment, and how other users have interacted with it.
- New Search Interface:Simply put…find stuff faster and easier
- New Map Layers:Overlay information on the map based con criteria such as “From Friends”, “Restaurant”, “Night Life”, etc. to make finding select information, events, and places easier.
- Dashboard:A new Dashboard interface hones in all of the features of Centrl and organizes them into one easy to use “hub” or starting point.
- New Privacy Settings:Decide who gets to see what with public and private “groups” that allow you to still keep a sliver of privacy in this vast digital age.
Centrl has impressed me enough that it will earn a new spot on one of my many iPhone homescreens. Though again, because of my location far from civilization, it won’t be used as often as I would like. I guess it gives me a reason to go on more vacations into the concrete jungle eh?
