Mobile photographers listen up, if you were looking for a higher megapixel count for your camera phone, step back, take a reality check and realize that camera’s will not replace a good digital SLR anytime soon. In reality, real photographers already know that it’s not necessarily the number of megapixels that matters most as it is the quality of the lens and algorithms/software used to shuttle physical images into “1″ and “0″ form.
With that little factoid expressed, we can get on with the program. Toshiba wants you to know, the megapixel race isn’t over yet as they’re prepping a new 14.6 megapixel beast. This photo-centric beast will be designed under Toshiba’s 65nm process and housed on 300mn slabs of silicon. Physical sizing aside, the real reason you need to be excited is because of a little feature called “back-side illumination” which is said to increase light absorption by up to 40%! Such an increase will no doubt work wonders for low light shots — something cameraphones have a heck of a time capturing cleanly and legibly.
The 14+ megapixel number may still be blurring your vision. But be careful, as stated before, just because it has the most megapixels, doesn’t automatically mean it will be the best, most useful mobile camera. If this little gem gets paired with a crappy lens and clumsy software, those megapixels will be more or less useless. We’ll have to wait until late Q4 2010/Q1 2011 to get any products in our hands as mass production isn’t slated to begin until Q3 2010. So we wait. Still interested?
If you’re really feeling crafty this weekend, you may want to take in the wonderful display of geeky wonder that surrounds the Rubiks Cube Flash Drive. The process of making your own copy isn’t very hard. It just takes a little bit of time. In this case, 3 days. Novelty flash drives are often crap full of crap with stupid designs and pathetic capacities. Custom made flash drives get a little bit of a break because, well, making your own flash drive is cool. It’s even better when your custom creation turns out to be the envy of many as is the case with the Rubiks Cube flash drive. So take the better half of the remaining week to prepare yourself for the Frankenstein project set to go down this weekend…
Oh boy. If you want to see a good form of irony, this is it folks. China is accusing Google of censorship. Never mind the fact that China has made headlines countless times for blocking numerous websites and social networking services above and beyond what is necessary. Though, censorship is never necessary. I’ll admit that many countries, the U.S. included, blocks sites here and there and manages to stay out of the public spotlight. But I’m sure we all know the difference between China’s censorship and everyone else’s censorship. Why all the commotion and sudden stampede of black pots and kettles running down the street?
It all has to do with a recent report written by China’s main newspaper, “The People’s Daily” accusing Google and their planned online book store of infringing on Chinese copyrights. For the last few days, the report on TPD’s website has been flagged as “malicious” in nature by Google and is seemingly unaccessible. Baidu, the 60+% top dog search engine in China reports no such problem.
So China is all upset because they are getting the ‘ol censorship stick smacked across their face? (If that is even the case at all…) Irony at it’s finest. So let’s take a poll: Is Google (A) proactively flagging and blocking The People’s Daily report/page, or is this (B) all some big mishap?
Don’t let the image above fool you, BlackBerries aren’t the only thing coming to town. Simply looking at what we have currently seen of upcoming handsets, Verizon already has quite the holiday season forming with the Moto Droid and Eris. Android isn’t everyone’s favorite mobile OS however (a travesty indeed). For those individuals, a leaked roadmap from VZW highlights everything else that is primed and ready to flaunt retail stores this holiday season.
Since we already know about the Droid and Eris, we can skip over them and devout more attention to a little surprise for BlackBerry users. Remember the first BlackBerry to be released with that next gen optical trackpad instead of the trackball? If you guessed the 8520 on T-Mobile you’re correct! The lower end Berry isn’t staying with the magenta warriors for too long as VZW has their own variant coming. This new low end Berry will go by the name “Curve2″.
Even BlackBerries aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. Moving on…again, we come to the Windows Mobile camp. WinMo fans have plenty to be excited about as well with the HTC Imagio and Ozone tag teaming your senses and wallets this holiday season. Even though WinMo isn’t my particular favorite, the Imagio and Ozone don’t look half bad.
Heck, even with explosive market growth, smartphones aren’t everyone’s first device of choice either. For those looking for a more practical and easy going handset, VZW’s holiday line up is packed with a slew of feature phones that will give you plenty to contemplate as gifting time nears. With so much to choose from, what are you going to choose?
Oh how I’d love to put my rear end on a piece of gaming history. Such thoughts I’ve had many a time, often dreaming of ways to transform my nerdy ways into more physical objects. Helping me on this never ending quest is the Tetris Chair. Killing two birds with one stone if you will, my thoughts are turning into physical objects and I’m turning my humble abode into a geek cave. The chair was designed by Gabriel Cañas and is so far a one-off. (read: not for sale…yet). I surely hope Garbriel can see what a grand object he has here and shares his gift with the rest of us nerds. The only thing I would possibly change is adding some cushion to an otherwise 100% fiberglass chair. I’d like to be able to sit in my new Tetris chair longer than 5 minutes before my ass goes numb. Don’t mock me. You know you want one…
You know, every time I stumble upon another steampunk-ified object I start to think “oh my god…again?” with a few exceptions here and there for truly impressive and unique ideas. Taking something as ordinary as a pumpkin is different from normal gadget/electronic versions of steampunk’d devices we’ve seen a lot of lately. But, in the spirit of Halloween and having a little fun, I decided to share this Steampunk Pumpkin with you. I admit, this metal clad pumpkin is actually pretty cool. I’m sure there are at least a few curious cells in between your ears. Go ahead and give the vid below a watch. What can it hurt?
Apparently things went well with the last co-op between U2 and RIM because as they did this past year, RIM will again be the title sponsor for U2′s 2010 North American tour. Taking on such a challenge is not for the faint of heart or light of wallet. Copious amounts of time, energy, and money are needed to put on such shows and tours. I applaud RIM for reaching out into the consumer space and trying to be “consumer cool”. Now, let’s just hope they do a better job than this past year’s (2009) tour as though RIM was very much a sponsor, a few pathetic banners strung across the performance venues and a some BlackBerry logos displayed on TV’s are hardly going to win over any new customers. Not to mention, such a lack of effort and presence by the main sponsor is pretty ridiculous. Let’s try to kick this next one up a dozen notches ‘ey RIM?
Somehow, somewhere, someone thought I knew a thing or two about mobile devices. Take a minute or two to check out Freescale's Smart Mobile Device Pundit 2012. There's some pretty big names on there and some awesome people. Not to worry. I won't judge you if you vote for someone else.
