Music preference is a highly subjective topic. People have varying tastes music for a variety of reasons. U2 has stood the test of time in the music scene. While not everyone’s favorite band, U2 has shown that they have what it takes to span the generations. To a digital nerd like me, I enjoy their music, though that’s not why I’m writing this. Tonight at 8:30pm PST (11:30pm EST) U2 will stream their entire concert, live from the Rose Bowl. Streaming live performances are nothing new mind you. But for a band of this magnitude and size to do such a consumer friendly and pro-digital thing is rather impressive to say the least as usually, old guys in suits (read: record labels and content owners) often stop such tactics dead in their tracks. So if you like U2 and find this new embracing of technology instead of trying to protect themselves form it as is all to common in the music industry, I encourage you to tune into U2′s official YouTube channel. Afterwards, come back and leave a comment on how you liked the concert as well as the technology used.
Living the life as a mobile internet tablet is full of obscurity and not knowing exactly what your purpose in life is. I mean, smartphones are small and powerful, easily able to slip into a pocket. Laptops are small computers that also have copious amounts of power on board (mid-higher end anyway) and are also relatively portable. Tablets and MID on the other hand are sort of stuck in a never ending limbo as they’re way to big to be categorized as a smartphone and often too underpowered and small to be a laptop.
That lifelong ambiguity hasn’t stopped C-montech however as their latest device titled the “Mangrove” is a 7″ behemoth and packs in quite the hardware punch:
7″ Touchscreen display
1GHz Snapdragon processor
WiFi/3G/WiMAX
One shortcoming for some (myself included) is the use of Windows Mobile 6.5. Hardly the modern OS I would have chosen. But minor quibbles aside, the physical presence the tablet portrays is enough to leave me transfixed on it’s sleek lines. Would you be interested in such a device? Or is 7″ in that weird size category that as stated earlier is both too small and too big?
Being a gadget nerd and digital aficionado, I can certainly understand the go go go pace that has taken ahold of society here in America as well as many other countries going through similar digital times. Because of this “always on” and living in the fast lane mentality, everyday simple tasks such as going to the bathroom become a hassle and are seen as a waste of time. Not all of us want to “work” while on the john nor do we want to do anything “intellectually deep”. Going to the bathroom should be a peaceful time. The Potty Fisher is a perfect companion to those looking to unwind mid-day from their busy lifestyles. A few minutes of potty fishing could be just the ticket to making a stressful day a good day. Not to mention, hardcore fishermen may find the added practice time key in scoring that next big catch out in the real world.
The small joys in life such as the Potty Fisher start at £9.99 ( ~ $16.50 USD).
You know, there are so many different types of Bottle openers that come in different shapes, sizes, colors, styles, etc. that someone could create quite a collection. If bottle openers are you thing, whether for a collection or just hobby, the Motorcycle Grip Bottle Opener should be near the top of your list. The physical styling is pretty cool though, a rather gimmicky motorcycle revving sound is activated every time you open a bottle. To each his own — the revving sound will delight some and annoy others.
** Facial recognition technology starts at 45 seconds in…
Buying an energy efficient TV and turning off the TV whenever you leave the room, no matter how short the time are just two things we can do to save electricity. A new application of facial recognition technology by Hitachi will soon give us another choice with a futuristic flare. The technology was shown off at CEATEC. As you can gather, the facial recognition tracks where your eyes are focused. Focusing on the TV keeps it on. Once your eyesight moves to some other object for a set period of time, the TV automatically turns off. Pretty nifty huh? Still, there’s plenty of times I’d like to leave the TV on when I leave the room. Even if I can’t see it, I can still hear it. Still, a cool use of facial recognition for sure. One that I hope will come sooner rather than later.
When taking pictures in low light conditions, using a flash often casts an unnatural, harsh directional light on the subjects or focal point in the picture. Professional photographers often make use of umbrella like attachments that help diffuse light and give it a more natural glow. But we’re not all photographers with countless attachment bags or the associated deep pockets that it takes to buy such equipment. Thankfully nifty and affordable attachment called the “Lightscoop” may just have you taking professional looking low light shots for a fraction of the price.
There really isn’t anything hi-tech behind the Lightscoop. All you do is attach it to your camera’s hot shoe and enjoy. The ‘Scoop redirects light upwards, bouncing it off the tops of walls and ceilings which ends up giving the immediate surroundings more of a glow instead of spotlight appearance. I don’t have one to try, but the concept seems plausible. If you’re having doubts about the effectiveness, a simple test can be done with a flashlight. Go into a dark room and point the flashlight around at a horizontal angle. Next, shine it at the ceiling and see how the room grows brighter.
Heck, at $35, you might as well give it a try. It’s by far one of the cheapest photography accessories you’ll ever find.
