Early Wii 2 rumors leak. Blu-ray, simultaneous world-wide launch in 2010?

  • October 29, 2009 3:52 pm

Great jumping Jehoshaphat. HD Wii! Hear that? Oh you missed it? That’s because it was the sound of a single, tiny grain of salt hitting the floor. Which signals how you should treat this rumor. According to a “very reliable source” of Logic-Sunrise (Google translated), the 2nd gen Wii, for now cleverly named “Wii 2″ will debut in 2010.

The main rumored feature that stands out is the Blu-ray support and hardware support for both 720p and 1080p. Sweet. Finally some HD. I know the Wii is still more popular than the Xbox 360 or PS3, but I’m just not into video games made in 2009 that still feature characters with blockheads ala late 90′s games. The whole jumping around and waving my arms like a mad man doesn’t strike my fancy either. I want eye candy and graphical power.

We know Nintendo has to embrace modern graphics and technology at some point unless they plan on jumping out of this whole gaming business all together. But somehow I just don’t think that’s on their future projection charts littering HQ do you?

Yup, you guessed it. iTunes 9.0.2 kills Pre sync.

  • October 29, 2009 3:38 pm

Ben and Jerry was one of my favorite cartoons growing up. For me, it was the whole stereotypical cat vs. mouse thing that always had me hooked. Now that I’m a big boy, (some may dispute that) I still watch cat and mouse drama every day. Except now it isn’t a cartoon. It’s a bit more “real”. Ladies and gents, I introduce to you Apple (cat) and Palm (mouse).

The round ‘n round battle that these two tech giants this one tech giant, and second, not so giant tech giant (figure it out, it isn’t hard) have been battling is quite amusing if a little old now. At first, it was a sort of “yay for Palm those sly devils” but has since become “good god again? When will they learn?” Palm has been relentlessly trying every trick in the book for disguising USB identifiers in order to get access to the wondrous world of native iTunes syncing. Eventually they will run out of tricks (or get sued) and then where will they be? Back with their god awful software. What exactly is there backup software?

I’m all for stickin’ it to the oppressive man which in this case is Apple. Will having the Pre sync with iTunes cause iPod and iPhone sales to catastrophically spiral downward? No. Apple’s just doing it because they can. After the first touché by Apple, you’d think Palm would have figured out that Apple had no interest in being their friend. All of this time, energy, and money Palm has been wasting engineering a way to break into Apple’s little world is the biggest waste. It would have been much more beneficial to direct those resources at developing their own software.

You’re turn Palm.

**Note for Palm: You may want to think about developing your own damn software now ok guys…

BlackBerry Theme: Waterfall

  • October 29, 2009 3:08 pm

It’s been a while since I covered some neat BlackBerry themes and since this mornings look at Transitions, I now find myself on a BB theme kick. This time, the theme comes from Bplay and goes by the name “Waterfall”. I’ll point out that I don’t normally cover animated themes as older Berries slow down to a crawl. Heck, even the latest Berries featuring 600+ MHz processors under the hoods often experiene adverse performance issues with animated themes. This theme however just struck me as plain cool. It isn’t any futuristic design or come with any insanely detailed icons or custom sounds, instead it’s the simple background of a tropical forest with animated falling waterfall and the occasional flying bird. Really it’s just a nice, slick, relaxing theme. The window to the rain forest comes in at the now standard $5.99 which really isn’t that bad all things considered. “Waterfall” is available for all BlackBerry devices.

  • Warning: BlackBerry Storm 9500 and 9530 devices have known custom theme problems on OS 5.0

You’ve been warned. It’s unlikely to brick your device though as the common issue seen amount 9500/9530 users on OS 5.0 has been mutilated UI appearance when flipping the device into horizontal mode as seen here. Still, be careful.

I’ll give you a minute to come down off of your certain gadget fueled high before I break some not so happy news….

Ok, now that, that is out of your system Ill get on with it. The GSM HTC Hero w/ AT&T specific 3G bands is coming to our continent. The bad part? It’s going to our friends up north on Telus. Damn! Those lucky Canadians. Eh, it’s not all bad. The biggest part of the battle — getting the right operating frequencies — is half over. Now you’ll just need to exercise your skills in unlocking, border crossing, and smoozing the various telco CSR’s to get this Telus bound beast working on AT&T. You know how it is. The greatest things in life require work. Plus, being the only geek in your circle to have a GSM Hero in the U.S. with working 3G will certainly earn you some geek points…

HTC Eris struts it’s stuff for the camera.

  • October 29, 2009 1:13 pm

The Droid may be the big daddy of Verizon’s lineup, but no everyone needs that much power. For those looking for a slightly simpler and more mid-range device, the HTC Eris looks to be your best bet. With a 5 megapixel camera (sans flash), good ‘ol WiFi tucked inside for good measure, and an eye raising, wallet friendly price of $99 means a whole lot more people area bout to jump on board this Android train. Can’t say I blame them. The Eris is actually a pretty compelling device. Look at all the Android devices currently on the market. Except for the Droid and maybe the hero, the Eris meets or exceeds all other devices which just goes to show how fast Android is progressing. Instead of owning outdated hardware 6-8 months down the road, you can look forward to irrelevance in a mere 2 months, falling from that “top spot” in no time flat. A disheartening way to look at things sure. Hey look at the bright side. It gives you a reason to splurge on gadgets more often so it can’t be all bad no? A couple more pics inside.

WordPress 2.0 for iPhone released! [Review]

Within the last several years, blogging has gone from a simple geeky thing enjoyed by tech journalists and gadget nerds to something that many people from all walks of life can partake in. Even more recently, with the explosion of smartphone usage, mobile blogging has started a sort of “rebirth” for the whole blogging scene since you can now take yourself and your blog on the road, expanding possibilities.

For iPhone users, there are several blogging apps each with their own pro’s and con’s. Since I run WordPress, my natural choice was the WordPress iPhone app. The first version was pretty good though was missing several features and abilities that just left it rather “meh” for me. Even other options I tried just weren’t quite working for my tastes so I just settled that for now, my mobile blogging experience would always rate a 3/5. Thankfully the WordPress team has come back to answer many complaints and requests with the first version of the app with version 2.0.

Trapped in time with the Cassette Ties.

  • October 29, 2009 9:50 am

There are tons of geeky clothing options available for those who just have to wear their personality on their sleeve. But what if you want to go above and beyond “normal geeks”? What if you want a piece of geeky clothing that will make even the most hardcore geeks step back, double take, and gawk? Well then, you my friend need a Cassette Tie.

Constructed from a 50% tape cassette tape and 50% polyester blend, these ties are actually quite simple and pretty “low-tech”. After turning the cassette of your choice into a tie, a basic hand-made reader is all that is needed to pick up and play audio information still readable on the tie. How cool is that!

The ties are the brain child of Alyce Santoro and Julio Cesar as they tried to come up with something unique, retro, and eco-friendly all in one fell swoop. And succeed they did. The ties are available at Surpermarket HQ for $90. The reader on the other hand will involve a few displays of craftiness from you. Making your own Cassette Tie reader isn’t hard and can be done with any old Walkman player. Watch the vid below for the full rundown.
