Official BlackBerry Storm OS 5.0.0.238 mutilates custom themes! [Update -- Fix!]

  • October 27, 2009 2:57 pm

**Update: There’s a fix folks. Find it here.

Disappointment for sure. It looks as if a nasty bug in the official BlackBerry 5.0 software renders custom BlackBerry Storm themes ugly and not quite so functional. The image above is from Kyle over at BlackBerry Cool and foreshadows a tidal wave of disappointment for all new BlackBerry Storm users who pick up a model with 5.0 pre-installed as well as those who have already upgraded.

In this particular issue, the phone in question is the BlackBerry 9530, second first gen storm. In portrait mode everything appears hunky dory. That is until you go all horizontal at which point a garish mix up of UI elements crop up on screen. Coupled with scrolling issues and certain UI elements and onscreen buttons being rendered useless, theme enthusiasts may be in for the ever common though much hated waiting game since such issues will most likely have to be addressed with Plazmic (now owned by RIM).

I’ll give Plazmic credit. They do some amazing themes with the BB theme software. But speed and “quickness” aren’t exactly their strong points. If it is a Plazmic issue, let’s hope they get it fixed. If it’s a deeper issue with OS 5.0, well, RIM best be on top of that like yesterday. With the Storm2 launching tomorrow, a whole lot of themers are going to be mighty upset. Stay tuned…

Chad Ochocinco to all who support “traditional” news based business models: “To hell with the middleman”

  • October 27, 2009 2:35 pm

The social networking bans making there way across various professional level sports is not only stupid, but extremely ignorant and short sighted on the leagues’ parts. First, by protecting old archaic business models and not embracing a new, modern technology, they are pushing themselves and their message further into irrelevance. Thankfully for us techies, Bengals player, Chad Ochocinco, isn’t taking this affront to modern news reporting or fan interacting lightly. Mr. Ochocinco is starting his own news network to “cut out the middleman”. Not just any news network mind you, but a Twitter-based reporting operation including many different individuals.

He seems to know what he’s doing too. With over 300,000 Twitter followers and a pretty big backing, I can’t deny that I’m rooting for him. You see, the problem is that old news and news organizations think they “own” the news when in fact they can’t and never will. News is not something you own. Any person can recycle the news to anyone they please. The fact that so many organizations and leagues think they have a right to deny a simple human being the right to tell another human an interesting story means that these oppressive organizations and leages have no right to be in business. Period.

The news, and the world on a larger level is moving online, going digital. Holding yourself back while at the same time trying to hold others back will only harm you and your colleagues. While such people and companies continue to struggle to make a buck, the intelligent and technologically competent will easily pass these old timers and introduce new, innovative and more consumer friendly services.

+1 Chad Ochocinco — Power to the people!

Last.fm rolling out new video service: “Last.tv”

  • October 27, 2009 1:54 pm

In the grand scheme of online streaming, three big names including Pandora, Spotify, and Last.fm could be considered the “big 3″ of their market. If you love the latter, you’re going to want to pay close attention to their new project titled: “Last.tv”. This new venture will revolve around (obviously) video content. Initially, CBS owned Last.tv will feature content from music festivals across Europe and is reported to be launching this coming January. Until then, CBS will be hard at work lining up sponsors and pre/post-video advertisers. Last.fm has so far enjoyed pretty widespread popularity with these new goals aiming to expand their brand name globally by pulling on board new technologies and services.

Adding video to the mix is a smart move that should bolster Last.fm’s presence. What’s interesting is that Last.tv will be available both online and offline, as well as operate separately from it’s music based sibling. Though initially, the new site will piggy back on Last.fm which will be the only way to access Last.tv at launch.

Taking on video will mean new competitors for the UK born streaming service with the most notable and immediate threat being YouTube. One leg Last.tv should have is that while YouTube initially started on not so stellar terms with music labels and had to “earn” their way to said content, Last.fm has enjoyed a relatively rosey relationship with the same labels. Hopefully for the greater good, this relationship transgresses over to the video site, Last.tv.

I’ve gone ahead and shot an email to Last.fm inquiring further, specifically on any U.S. plans for Last.tv service. I’ll keep you guys (and gals) update as I find out more.

Android 2.0 (Eclair) gets the “official” treatment.

  • October 27, 2009 1:24 pm

Are you eager dying to know everything, and I mean everything about Android 2.0 (Eclair)? Even though Verizon’s various documents and product marketing material have done an ok job giving us a few talking points on Google’s up and coming update, if you really want to know every nook and cranny of the beauty that is Eclair, the video below needs to be in your que.

If you’re of the impatient type, I’ll go ahead and give you something to get you going. Some of the more drool worthy Android 2.0 features:

  • WVGA (800×480) and FWVGA (854×480) support
  • Revamped browser UI w/ HTML 5 support
  • Exchange Support
  • Drastically improved on-screen keyboard
  • Multi-touch support
  • Improved & deeper camera controls

Such things are the very tip of the iceberg mind you. It’s in your best interest to take a look at the video below. Sit back and watch it. When you’re done, watch it again. Then lets us know what you think. Please T-Mobile, get an Android device as awesome as the Moto Droid and soon! Heck, I’ll pretty much take anything with Android 2.0 at this point. Though it appears I may be waiting just a tad as subtle hints in the vid below have Verizon slyly admitting to a small exclusive period with Android 2.0. Here’s to hoping it’s indeed short…

DJ/Producer David Guetta releases iPhone app.

  • October 27, 2009 12:21 pm

David who? Here in the states, this Paris born DJ and music producer may not ring a lot of bells. I have to say that I love sampling music from all of the world on a daily basis. While I haven’t sat down and listened to any of David’s work, I have at least heard of him in my digital journey. Other notable mentions for David Guetta include producing the Black Eyed Peas hit song “I’ve Got A Feeling” as well as a lifetime of DJ’ing throught Paris and France. In a move that many more artists should explore, David, in collaboration with MXP4 and Redshift is releasing his own iPhone app.

At first, the move may seem kind of gimmicky, almost like a ploy to simply grab a couple more dollars of your cash by making an “app” that simply lets your listen to a few songs, stream some content, and read some bios. Thankfully those behind the app realize such half hearted attempts aren’t generally well received and that an honest attempt at a good iPhone app is the best course of action.

A few of the features included within the app:

  • MXP4 MIX IT and REMIX IT solutions: Allows fans to remix and play with the smash hit ‘Sexy Chick.’
  • TOUR TRACKER: An interactive, real-time world map that shows where David is mixing and DJing. Fans are able to connect with and share location, pictures and comments.
  • REAL TIME UPDATES: Live feed of updates, photos, videos and tweets directly from David Guetta

Ok, so the feed’s may be kind of common in this type of app. But the tracking and social aspects are pretty cool. What do you think? Worth a look? Want to see more artists releasing mobile apps that go above and behind a simple digital booklet? I know I do.

**If you can’t see the vid below, check out the app directly from YouTube

CyanogenMOD back with 4.2.1 stable release

  • October 27, 2009 10:38 am

Looking back but a mere month ago, hearing the word “CyanogenMOD” meant sadness and sorrow as it was at that time Google sent Mr “Mod a cease-and-desist order because of his Android tinkering. Thankfully a common ground was reached and Cyanogen could continue on pleasing many Android tinkers across the world. To mark the anniversary, a new stable release of CyanogenMOD, ver. 4.2.1 has been released. Different from other versions however, this one will lack all of the Google branded/Google Experience apps such as Gmail, maps etc. Don’t fret though as all of those lovely apps can be had if you first back up your device before going through with the CyanogenMOD install. See easy stuff. We can have our cake and eat it too. Perfect!

The main highlight of this latest release is the much improved speed that graces this latest Android build bringing lag and hangups to a cease. Another thing that may get your nerdy juices flowing is the option to lock the “home app”. Doing so will make all of those home refresh times when closing an app a thing of the past. Whew. Best get on it!

I never thought I’d want twins until I saw the “Copy/Paste” T-Shirt

  • October 27, 2009 10:26 am

If you ever wondered what the best outfit to dress twins in was, I have the answer. The “Ctrl + C” and “Ctrl + V” t-shirts. As Gizmodo’s Jesus Diaz points out, (and because I’m a fellow Mac user) I would need slightly modified “Cmd + c” and “Cmd + v” captions. Perfect. Funny. Clever. I’ll take two please.
