F your smartphone. No really! [iPhone Art]

  • November 24, 2009 1:54 pm

fuck-your-smartphoneWe could try all day to express our feelings of anger, disgust, and outright hate by “talking it out” or using other means. But why do all of that nonsense when a simple “fuck” is all that is really needed? Think you have it bad for that smartphone of yours? The owner of this iPhone obviously had some anger problems. It isn’t so bad though. Instead of punching kittens and killing fish he decided to go the verbal route and use one of the most versatile and colorful words contained within the confines of the human language. The creators precision and use of color and ingenuity is brilliant. Bravo good chap, bravo.

The Sega Genesis iPhone Dock

If you’re looking at the image above wondering if it’s plausible….or even fully working, I can honestly say yes, yes it is. The photo above shows the end result of an old Sega Genesis tear down by Wired’s Charlie Sorrel. According to Charlie, their was plenty of room to jam some small speakers inside and make this Japanese Genesis belt out tunes in line with some of the greater iPod docks. But in the end he choose to keep things nice and simple. Hey, I’m simply amazed in wonderment at the sheer geekery of everything before my eyes. This and a whole lot more can be seen back in Chris’s original post over at Wired. I don’t know about you, but every time I come across old antique gaming junk in the basement I’m going to try and think of all kinds of ways to give it a fresh albeit Frankenstein-ish take on life.

Rob a bank Pokemon style: The Pikachu Ski Mask

deviantART is a place where the creative and crafty can strut their stuff both in digital and physical form. So far in my dealings with the uber geek site, I’ve stayed well within the digital realm of what is encompassed. Little did I know there is so, so much more available. Things such as the Pikachu Bank Robbers Ski Mask make me realize that perhaps a stroll through the other side of deviantART is warranted. Created by deviantART user sugarcoatidli3z, the mask certainly pulls of the creative side of things doesn’t it? Ready to drop a few bills?

2880 x 900 curved display by Ostendo beckons your visual cortex

Anyone thinking their multi-monitor setup is “the king” needs to get familiar with the 2880 x 900 43″ monster from Ostendo. As you can see above, (careful, close your mouths…) the screen is very large, curved, and all around a technological beautiful thing to look at. I mean I wouldn’t mind staring at it’s clean glass surface for hours on end. To put the sheer width of the 32:10 screen in perspective:

  • 180% wider than 16:9
  • 240% wider than 4:3

Those thinking that Ostendo is playing on this whole “curved display” fad without any real specs must know that it makes use of the latest LED technology as well as featuring a lightning quick .02 millisecond refresh rate. Of course, the fact that it pumps out pixels at 2880 x 900 doesn’t hurt either. The only painful thing is the amount at which it costs to join this club — $6499. Ya, that halted your part bus didn’t it?

BassJump adds some sonic junk to your Macbook’s trunk

Macbook users have come to depend on their digital appendage just as if it were a real attached limb. It offers a good balance of price, power, and looks all wrapped in a nice little aluminum package. The screen is crisp, the processor fast, and the speakers suck..wait what? Yes, the speakers on pretty much any Apple laptop suck. They’re tinny and lifeless, lacking any midrange or bottom end whatsoever. But a new accessory made specially for Mac laptops, the “BassJump”, looks to be quite the worthy upgrade to any music lover finding their Macbook’s sound merely adequate. Keeping mobile users in mind, this portable sub woofer is powered solely by the USB cable so any extra cables and weight can be left at home. As far as getting the sonic goods to your ears, the BassJump makes use of proprietary software that remixes all of the audio and routes standard frequencies to the normal speakers and lower frequencies to the ‘Jump. Think it’s worth the $80 admission charge? The sonic lover in me is leaning towards yes.

Twidroid 3.0 for Android coming early December

  • November 24, 2009 8:11 am

twidroidEven though I wasn’t initially enamored with Twitter, I have come around in the last year. While I’m still by no means a twit-a-holic, I do find myself spending more and more time on the popular micro-blogging network. Since I jumped ship from my iPhone to the Android platform, I’ve been looking far and wide for a comparable Twitter client. Twidroid has generally been crowned the top Android Twitter app, though unfortunately isn’t even close to Tweetie 2 for the iPhone. Now I’m not saying this to knock Twidroid, I’m merely stating that the Android Twitter apps need more time and refinement. Along these lines, I mentioned a nifty app called Touiteur a few days ago. This Twitter app (still in development) looks to be one of if not the best Android Twitter app once released. Obviously the developers behind Twidroid don’t want to see that and have formerly announced that Twidroid 3.0 is coming. Coming when? “Early December”. Now I have two Twitter apps to keep my eyes on. Being the spec hounds that you are, I’m sure you want some hard info. The new specs include:

  • Threaded conversations
  • Twidroid plugins + examples on our website (e.g. google maps, support any photo service)
  • Single tweet view with extended infos
  • Remember timeline position setting
  • Jump to top in timeline button
  • Autocomplete usernames for replies
  • Bring up tweet box directly by typing @
  • DM list now with avatars

So after looking at the list above, and checking out that earlier post I mentioned about Touiteur, we can see that both of these apps are approaching the whole Twitter scene differently. Twidroid is continuing it’s strong presence with more functionality. Touiteur being the newcomer is bringing a rather large feature list as well as a more visually pleasing, clean UI. Is Twidroid’s UI in need of refinement? To some that’s debatable. Personally I’m finding the UI in Touiteur a bit more finger friendly and clean. But again, that’s my preference. Still, it doesn’t take away from the robust feature set of Twidroid 3.0. When all is said, which app has your most interested: Twidroid 3.0 or Touiteur?

Help a nerd out: Vote for Jake Kirshner to gain blogging rights to CES and attend Winter Olympics in 2010

  • November 24, 2009 6:58 am

jakeWhile I understand Jake Kirshner is a Gizmodo reader (no hate, I love reading Gizmodo too), I still find it worthwhile to mention his cause. You see, he’s one of the top finalists in Microsoft’s contest to send one lucky blogger/athlete to both CES and the Winter Olympics in 2010. As you can imagine, both are incredibly rare and exciting opportunities. Jake you see is a Computer Science major at the University of Utah (read: he’s a nerd), therefore the CES trip is more than needed. But not only is he a gadget nerd, he’ a competitive skier as well — hence the Winter Olympics tour — who happens to know how to blend his two loves together on his website, JakeCast. It is there that he posts videos from his helmet mounted POV cam to give us all a small taste of what he experiences each and every time he throws himself over the snow covered edge.

If you’re feeling a bit of kindheartedness this fine November morning, why not stop on by the official contest page and cast your vote for one Jake Kirshner to fulfill two of his biggest fantasies.
