To most, Intel’s latest 32-nm Arrandale processors are the glean in our eyes. They promise increased speeds, more cores, better integrated graphics, and an overall smaller energy footprint. So why would anyone not want to incorporate such a chip? Of all the companies and manufacturers that come to mind, does it surprise you that Apple may have a problem? You see, the big deal with Arrandale is the greatly increased integrated graphics. Apple themselves have been researching as of late into their own graphics solutions, looking to distance themselves from 3rd parties such as Nvidia. Moving away from 3rd party reliance isn’t entirely new as rumors have circulated in the recent past of Apple researching the world of mobile processors to include in their iPhone platform among other ventures…
Anyway, back on topic. The rumor according to “sources close to the matter” state that Apple is refusing to employ any Arrandale or Calpella platform processors because of the integrated graphics. Apple has long been outspoken of integrated graphics from Intel as being underpowered and not up to the companies’ expectations. With that said, refusing to adopt the processors until Intel removes the included integrated graphics can be seen as a rather brash move. Though it’s worth noting that things with Nvidia haven’t always been all buddy buddy in the past either as Apple has also voiced the desire of designing and developing their own graphics solutions. So Apple doesn’t have friends on any corner. What now?
Apple’s defiant move isn’t anything new though as they’ve always prided themselves in taking the “other” path. With AMD’s “Manhattan” line of DirectX 11 Mobile GPU products not quite living up to snuff, it’s somewhat disappointing that there isn’t more competition in this sector of the market. Remember though, this is all rumor and heresy for now without any official word from Apple. Do you think it’s a wise decision?
