The cost for building a 158-lens uber camera: $331.80. The chance to get your name in the Guinness World Record books for your creation: priceless. Ok, so the 158-lens camera costs a tad more than $331 as there is more to a camera than just lenses. But hearing that you can make a 158-lens camera for *roughly* $330 catches your eye doesn’t it?
The camera is the end result of a project headed by Nagoya Institute of Technology Associate professor, Yojiro Ishino and his students, to capture a swaying flame from “as many angles as possible”. Riveting stuff I tell you. In all honesty, super slow-mo and multiple angled shots of science stuff is often pretty sweet. In all, 6-months of blood sweat, tears, and money came together to form the super camera you see above. Even though the “super” camera moniker may bring images of a massive piece of glass, the collection of lenses above is actually rather small at only 7.2cm high and 47cm in diameter.
One strange thing to note is that the camera above officially received it’s Guinness World Record certificate on November 24th, but is only appearing in the news today. Even still, the delay doesn’t dampen the coolness of such a device.
You know, if the science community and other geeky groups ever run out of ideas for the uber camera, I’m sure Mr. Hefner himself wouldn’t mind renting the camera for some “personal use” for a few days eh…eh? *nudge nudge wink wink*
