Revamped Android 2.1 (Flan) gallery ported to 2.0. Easy .apk install now possible.

Ok, how about some more Android news? Unless you live in some cave (that doesn’t have WiFi or cellular access) then you probably have seen at least 54 times the updated UI of Android 2.1 in stock form. Among the many subtle and not so subtle changes, the revamped gallery is one of the most striking. It finally brings more sophisticated pizazz to a well deserving platform in need of some more eye candy. With that said, it’s been available to port over to 2.0 for a little while now, only it involved some busybox and command line tom foolery that push away a chunk of hopefuls.

Thankfully, a nicely wrapped package is now available to us in the form of a simple to install .apk file. Installation is super simple:

  • Copy file to SD card
  • Enable “Unknown Sources” in Settings > Applications
  • Use a file manager on the phone to browse to the gallery.apk file and install it.

See, easy! From here on out (or until 2.0/.1 users are officially upgraded to 2.1), you will have two gallery applications — the old boring one and the new, Android 2.1 Flan edition.

**Bonus: If you don’t want two gallery applications cluttering up your app drawer, simply rename the original gallery.apk to something else so that it doesn’t load/appear.
