SNES Controller becomes self sufficient gaming platform…

  • December 22, 2009 10:25 am

ROM’s are a geeks best friend. Today apparently they seem to be a hot topic…

Ever want to carry a library of ROM’s in a convenient, stylish, and portable form factor that you can take with you from computer-to-computer? The SNES controller above had the guts removed and replaced with the contents of a flash drive as well as a USB hub. The results is a controller that houses all the ROM’s you could ever want combined with a single cable allowing you to hook up and play said ROM’s on any computer. Now that is true plug-in-play support gaming on the go. This is of course a proof of concept in that you could make a similar device from any controller from any platform and inject your own ROM’s.

Consider me impressed. *…starts looking for old gaming controllers…*

“Transparent Trucks” to save countless lives if they didn’t cost multiple arms and legs…

  • December 22, 2009 7:56 am

“Transparent Truck”? At first it sounds like some weird Sci-fi contraption or lead in to the often talked about invisibility cloak. But in reality it isn’t anything high tech or that complicated. The picture above shows this transparent truck concept for what it really is — a simple yet ingenious implementation of technology on the roadways. The only problem in the near-term is cost. As with most forward thinking and leading edge tech, it will cost a pretty hefty sum of money to make anything resembling the transparent truck an actual reality.

Obvious things to consider when developing such a device/service is the cost of the camera needed up front as well as the type of display to use ’round back. I can’t imaging massive 100″ flat screens would be very cost effective or resilient to the rough and tough nature of the world’s trucking environment. A projection type of system would be exponentially cheaper. But then there’s the whole thing with the transparency of the back door and door strength being an entirely different issue. A concept it will remain for now…

It’s a shame really — this technology has the ability to save countless lives, especially those living in mountainous regions. Any interested investors out there want to take the plunge?

San Fran Transbay Tube riders can now yak it up even further underground thanks to expanded wireless coverage.

  • December 22, 2009 7:23 am

It’s kind of unfitting for a tech guru such as myself, one who loves all kinds of lights, sounds, gadgets, and gizmos to live in a land full of nothing but corn and cattle. In short: it sucks. To get my digital/big city fix I have to venture roughly 85 miles west to Chicago. Not really that long of a commute, but still enough to make me want to move. There is however one small issue with big cities — cellphone service/reception isn’t always the greatest due to the extreme amount of stacked concrete all around as well as the increased density of cellphone users whom place greater strain on the network. One other big obstacle of big cities: subways.

San Fransisco is one such city where subways, hills, and buildings make for an unsettling cellular experience. But that experience just received a big boost today with the announcement that the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) will now offer wireless access throughout the Transbay Tube. All the way from West Oakland BART Station to Balboa Park, users traveling in underground in the subway can yak/text/browse it up all while being 6+ feet under.

The best part about the whole ordeal is that favorites are not played. AT&T, MetroPCS, Sprint/Nextel, T-Mobile, and Verizon customers can all benefit form the underground cellular coverage making everyone’s commute a bit less boring.

It’s worth noting that subway coverage has been offered as early as 2001. The amount of coverage however wasn’t as large as it is now. To date, 35% of the underground subway maze is now saturated with wireless goodness with continued projects in 2010 further increasing the underground network’s range.

In case you were wondering, 2010 will see the following rollouts:

  • First Quarter 2010: Oakland WYE, 12th, 19th and Lake Merritt Stations
  • Second Quarter 2010: Ashby, Berkeley, North Berkeley Stations and connecting tunnels
  • Third Quarter 2010: Berkeley Hills Tunnel
  • 2011 and beyond: South San Francisco, San Bruno and connecting tunnels.

Anyone in the Bay area care to share a little as to the underground experience?

LG and Sprint to showcase new device at CES. Lotus 2 or Prada III to drop? [Update]

  • December 22, 2009 5:53 am

What was your original impression of the LG Lotus? For those who don’t remember, it was a goofy shaped “tweener” phone with a more square shaped design. Not exactly stylish in my opinion. Though many in the mobile world are no doubt in love. For you love birds I have some *almost* good news. LG and Sprint are taking the stage together at CES this year for a grand launch party centering around some new mobile device.

Generally when I see the words “LG” and “Fashion” I think of the Prada line of phones. However, to date, not a single Prada device has made it stateside or as a CDMA device no less, so a US, CDMA Prada all in one fell swoop is unlikely. Though a pleasant surprise would be nice wouldn’t it?

Instead, a small blurb the original press release for this grand unveiling said:

Fans of the fashion runways will appreciate the couture style of LG Lotus, exclusive to Sprint.

Common sense would indicate a Lotus 2. But again, it’s all heresy and rumor until something a bit more official drops. Speculate away and leave it in the box below…

**Update: It’s kind of unclear in my original post above, but a Prada III (for European users) is also highly possible given the focus on “fashion”. However, as we already went over, a US + CDMA model isn’t too likely which is why a US announcement will probably feature the Lotus 2. But we could all be pleasantly surprised…

HTC HD2 video showing TMO branding all but confirms what we already knew…

  • December 22, 2009 5:35 am

Regardless of your opinion on Windows Mobile, you have to admit that the HTC HD2 — all 4.3″ of it’s glass faced frontal beauty — is a drop dead gorgeous phone. Currently however, US citizens are left without any official channels to pick up a subsidized or even a US version of the device. That’s all set to change in the not too distant future.

A video (below) showing a new “2.0.1″ ROM showcases among other things, a very familiar magenta boot image that goes “Stick Together” — a TMO slogan. And this isn’t the Euro-TMO slogan mind you, but the burly chested American verison.

Without any official confirmation from TMO or HTC, this technically is still nothing more than a rumor. But with a boot image showing a US based GSM carrier in full garb as well as countless other murmurings and rumors that have centered around this very same device and carrier pairing make it a rumor that is hard to discredit.

We can pretty much bet on seeing this soon, 1H 2010 for sure.

Bark 4 Beer Dog Collar Bottle Opener: The Greatest dog collar. Ever.

  • December 22, 2009 5:21 am

You know, as much as I mention gadgets and other forms of digital tom geekery that in one way or another service alcohol, I wouldn’t be surprised of all of you started to think I was some sort of alcoholic. But such isn’t the case. And no, I’m not in denial either. Even still, regardless of alcohol consumption, you have to find an invention as clever and ingenious as the Bark 4 Beer Dog Collar Bottle Opener as a gift to all mankind.

The collar itself is pretty standard run of the mill nylon. The bottle opener itself is where it get’s interesting. Feel free to open whatever bottles you can find a full two feet from dear old dog’s neck all while he blankly stares at you — clever creatures they are.

Further quelling thoughts I’m some sort of alcoholic — there are plenty of other liquids that come in bottles requiring bottle openers besides beer. Is $14.95 too much to make your seemingly happy family friend even more useful in the walk we call life? For as much as I’ve seen some other gimmicky collars go, this is a steal.

Question of the Day: Should Motorola and Sony Ericsson merge?

  • December 21, 2009 3:55 pm

Mergers are one of the capitalist societies greatest assets. Some companies just need help. ‘Nough said. Think of two tech companies that you feel would most benefit from a merger. Don’t think of you’re typical successful giant overtaking a small startup. Instead, focus on mergers that would equally benefit both companies. If you’re thinking like WSJ’s Sanford Bernstein, the two top candidates for a merger if there were to be one would be Motorola and Sony Ericsson.

Just think, both companies are pretty decent in their own respects but lack the overall push or pizazz to truly become market leaders. SE designs some truly striking hardware. Software on the other hand isn’t their strong suite. Motorola similarly designs some rather notable hardware — though there’s is more rugged and utilitarian in approach — but is in stark contrast to SE’s more stylish and eye catching appeal. Still, the two could benefit one another.

Just because it makes sense for Moto and SE to merge doesn’t mean it would be easy. Moto is based in Chicago, SE is lightly peppered around Europe in a couple locations. The two becoming one would ultimately lead to some CEO shake-ups and body shifting to say the least. Would it be worth it?

According to Bernstein, a merger between the two would simultaneously boost market share and decrease operating costs to the tune of 10% (decrease in operating costs). Even with Moto’s recent success with the Droid, if past experiences are anything to go by, a 10% boost in market share in the current mobile playing field is nothing to shake a stick at.

So what do you say? Would a Sony Ericsson/Motorola merger be worth everyone’s while or is it an idea destined to doom from the start?
