Nvidia bypassing 300 series cards, jumping straight into the 4′s with the GTX 470 and 480.

In any given field of commerce, a company will generally wring out every last dollar and marketing opportunity they can from a particular product before moving onto the next generation even if the product they’re pushing is grossly old or outdated. In the digital/tech world, such things are often gut wrenching to endure as the technology realm isn’t nearly as forgiving with age. Nvidia appears to eschew such thinking as is evident by their announcement concerning their new, upcoming graphics cards.

The GTX 470 and 480 will leap frog the 3xx line in what is a rather uncommon display of progression. It’s worth noting that they aren’t technically skipping 3xx numbering altogether as the GeForce 310 actually dips it’s toes in the 3xx waters. Seeing as how it’s a re-badged GeForce 210 however, it’s kind of a moot point, wouldn’t you say? Besides the aforementioned jump in conventional naming, the 4xx series will also enjoy being the first GF100 (Fermi) powered cards. For hard gamers out there, this is very good news.

Hitting the market by the end of February, the 4xx series cards aim to be the best yet from Nvidia. For the consumer, we can only hope that all of them are DirectX 11 compatible as even a low end card shouldn’t be DX10 only at this point. Check back for specs and more details as we inch through February and closer to launch time. For now, prepare your credit cards/checkbooks. It’s going to hurt…
