Venezualen president Hugo Chavez equates Twitter and online criticism to terrorism. *rolls eyes*
How often do we see government officials lambasting some part of the internet, telling tales of how it’s evil and destroying the world? Unless you live in a cave deep underground, away from human civilization, it’s an almost weekly occurrence. With that said, we’ve seen the internet, and more importantly social networking play a big role over the last year in regards to world events. Election revolts in Iran — need I say more? The latest online protesting is hitting a tad closer to home in Venezuela.
Venezualen president, Hugo Chavez, has been facing mounting criticism as of late over his crackdowns on state run media and the internet in general, with him going as far as calling Twitter a “terrorism threat”. Now people who are fortunate enough to live in a country with free speech, we know that such claims are baseless, stupid, and prove the incompetence of this “fearless leader”.
Who am I to mock the president of Venezuala? I’m no one. I’m but one voice, one blogger on the internet. But that’s just it. The internet is a free and open playing field and should always remain as such. Governments, companies, or individuals who try to limit freedom on the internet by any means are the real terrorist threat and affront to humanity.
With that said, Hugo Chavez — you’re an idiot.
