Moto DROID 2.1 update delayed…again…

  • March 18, 2010 12:18 pm

Those crazy ninjas of the VZW underground…. Somehow BGR always gets the low down dirt. Today’s edition of ultra secret news could potentially hit Moto DROID users pretty hard. A new rumor now confirmed development has the Moto DROID 2.1 update that was scheduled to start rolling out day, delayed. According to the source, a last minute bug that wasn’t discovered until late last night/wee hours of the morning is the culprit. I’d be interested to know exactly what the cause for the hold up was. Though in the end, it doesn’t really matter.

Some interesting info can be gleaned when skimming through the comments on BGR however. One comment in particular by a Jason Grier puts the blame not on VZW or Google but on the company who owns the systems that actually “push” out the update. Call me crazy, but I thought VZW would handle something like that? Anyone care to shed some light?

Those waiting rather impatiently for the legit 2.1 upgrade may have another sleepless night or two in store.

Virus protection moves to the cloud with Immunet.

  • March 18, 2010 11:54 am

While I may run a Mac as my primary computer, I still deal with Windows machines on a daily basis. Because of that, I can never become complacent or comfortable with simply not caring about viruses. Doing so and still spending a considerable amount of time inside of the Windows environment can only end badly for not only me, but those who communicate with me as well. As we all know, much like human viruses, computer viruses can spread just as well, often taking out countless more users in the process. Taking care of these digital diseases over the years has been mainly done with desktop software. The several years however, the digital landscape has changed considerably, with many services that were once considered “desktop only” now moving to the cloud. Highlighting what I said above, how has virus protection done in the migration from local hard disk to blazing fast SSD in a server farm far far away?

Immunet is one such cloud-based virus protection “program” that is a godsend to those with little local space for large programs, don’t want the resource murdering traits of a full blown virus solution, or simply want to try something new. To start, Immunet is 100% free. That right there usually perks up a few ears. But soon thereafter, many quickly lose interest as many desktop virus programs that happen to be free never quite live up to their more expensive brethren. After using Immunet for several weeks, I can honestly say that it is better than the “free” bullet point would lead to. So how exactly did Immunet get started?

The first feature — the cloud — isn’t really new anymore. All it refers to is that something resides on a server, somewhere, far away from your computer. The second “crowd sourcing” feature is actually worth more attention as it is a really cool feature to brag about. The implementation is pretty easy to grasp — whenever an Immunet user encounters a virus, their machine sends the info and scan logs to the Immunet central servers where it is then cataloged and instantly passed on to all other users, giving them protection against that very same virus.

The benefits can quickly be seen. Now instead of having a virus start in a few select areas and spread across unprotected areas because “normal” virus software can only be updated so much, Immunet with it’s cloud based and effectively real-time crowd sourced database means you’ll never be “behind the curve”. If you want a simple image to go by, think of this: Immunet’s business model is effectively an upside down pyramid. Normal virus software downloads MB’s upon MB’s of data to your computer in the form of virus definitions. Immunet on the other hand stores everything on the server and then compares your machine against their virus database and viola!

Overall, using the service is fast and easy. It may not have the numerous windows, panes, tabs, and deep options of some of the more expensive desktop virus software, but for a simple solution (what more do you really need than to scan for viruses?), Immunet is one worth taking a hard look.

Because it’s an extremely light install ~4MB, lightening quick, and barely dips into your local machine’s resources, I have no choice but to recommend Immunet to the millions of net connected computer users out there. It is one tool that your computer shouldn’t be without. Coupled with a desktop virus software package, Immunet’s abilities and usefulness are only magnified. Hey, you can’t ever be too safe, can you?

Going above and beyond: The Steampunk Desktop

  • March 18, 2010 11:35 am

We’ve seen plenty of steampunk-style gadgets come through here, some not so great. Conversely, some steampunk gadgets have been downright awe-inspiring. But all of those deal with a single ‘punk-ified gadget. The “Steampunk Desktop” created by Old Time Computer” goes to show what going past 10, and on to 11 can do. Clearly not content with merely going through the motions, OTC went for it all. Looking at all the old time materials and new fangled digital goodness working in harmony, I’d say they succeeded.

What’s your favorite steampunk gadget?

Copy&Paste on WinPhone 7 after all…?

  • March 18, 2010 9:48 am

Let it be known, the last few days have been a roller coaster ride for Windows Mobile/Windows Phone users (and hopefuls). The announcement that copy&paste wasn’t going to be available at launch has filled the interwebs the last couple of days. For good reason though. Regardless of how “smart” an OS is at determining types of data and what to do with them, good ‘ol fashioned cut/copy/paste always has it’s place. There may be hope however as Long Zheng, a long-time Windows blogger/aficionado has come forward stating that copy&paste is in fact coming — just not yet.

He goes on saying that the Windows Phone team has already determined how they’re going to make it all work, it’s just a matter of too much code to truck through and too little time. So, the decision was made to launch without it. If you ask me, that’s a very good decision assuming that this account is accurate. As much as I’ve already criticized M for the lack of copy&paste on WinPhone 7, delaying an already 1+ year late entrant into the mobile OS arena would be even more devastating.

Those looking to join the WinPhone 7 party: Are you feeling a bit better about your future now, knowing that there is some possible hope after all?

Weed, Check!…Whiskey, Check!…Wait, what about our baby?

  • March 18, 2010 7:58 am

This isn’t techy by a long shot, it really is quite horrible, but I did think it was absolutely amazingly hysterical. Have you ever been sitting around smoking a fatty drinkin some Jack and realize you still have to deal with your children? I know this feeling (not really), not sure what to do with them when you want to get sloshed out of your mind. As parents we put up with a lot, don’t get me wrong, and sometimes we need to just be left alone and allowed to get screwed up with our significant others.

That is exactly what Larry Long of Kentucky said two nights ago. He had been smoking the sticky icky at the restaurant he worked at, when he proceeded to his house to drink mass amounts of whiskey with his childs mother. High as a giraffes ass, and drunk out of his mind he proceed to gently lay his baby, not in a manger, not in a crib, but in his oven as he went to bed. Now, I’ve been pretty f00ked up before, had no idea how I made it to bed, or even made it home, but, I’ve never once put either of my children in the oven. I can honestly say the thought has never even crossed my mind.

Mr. Long didn’t switch the oven on, it was left off, and even left it slighty ajared(I’m assuming the baby was afraid of the dark, and he wanted to make sure it had some light) and it wasn’t until 5.30am the next morning he was startled awake by a crying baby.  After realizing what an idiot he was, he immedietly phoned a mental health crisis hot line, who then alerted the proper authorities.

Larry Long blames the wise decision on the weed, saying it was probably laced with a hallucinatory agent. That is some gooooooooood shit! He was, of course, placed in jail with a bail set at $10,000.  The baby is in the custody of family members, not the wife! Hopefully he gets pummeled in prison for being such a n00b!

When “just right” is transposed to the lawn mowing world…

  • March 18, 2010 5:56 am

If I was faced with the task of mowing 5-10 acres, it would be full on riding mower for me. Even though I’m young and fit, walking would take way too long. If the yard were smaller though — say 1/4 acre — I’d be much more inclined to walk. Besides sometimes being faster than riding in smaller yards, walking also helps prevent your body from aging too quickly. For someone that sits on their ass in front of a computer all the time, I can attest to this fact.

But what if you didn’t want to walk, and you couldn’t afford a large riding mower? Well then, you’d pick up a lawnmower scooter. Yes, a scooter with a blade — albeit a tiny blade. Looking at the yard the scooter is framed in, I sure as hell hope they aren’t marketing a yard of that size to a mower that small.

On the other hand, my Grandma would love this thing.

Official image of Nvidia GTX 480 leaked!

  • March 18, 2010 5:24 am

What better way to wake up than to a fresh leak of information and visual representation of the latest and greatest graphics card to hit the market. If anything else, the heat pipes jutting out of the side make for quite the interesting sight. The DirectX11 toting GTX 480 is certainly a potent piece of hardware. If it weren’t for the lofty price tag (and perhaps the lack of DisplayPort) I’d have me one in a heartbeat. For now, dual ATI 5850′s will have to do. Feel free to take a stab at the Turkish statement below…
