“Retro” gaming on the go with the Portable, Flip Top GameCube

  • March 22, 2010 7:59 am

When I think of “retro” gaming consoles, the GameCube isn’t necessarily one that first comes to mind. Yet if you really think about it in technology years, the GameCube is pretty old. Just because it’s old doesn’t mean we can’t still have some fun with it though. One of the most popular mods for gamers and tinkers alike is the “portable console mod”. Taking a console such as a PS2, Dreamcast, or in this case, a GameCube, and transforming it into something small and lightweight means added entertainment on the road.

The man behind the work is seasoned modder, “Techknott”. For the Flip-top GameCube, a considerable amount of engineering and ingenuity had to be employed in order to shrink down that rather bulky cube into a more “pocketable” experience. In truth, you probably won’t want to attempt stuffing this in your pocket. What it lacks in real world pocket-ability however, it more than makes up for it in added mobile entertainment. Just think of all the amazing NES/SNES/GameCube games you can now play on the go!

I’d totally make one if I had time…and a GameCube to sacrifice. Anyone else willing to take the plunge?

The space limited, USB deficient computer users saving grace: The Infinite USB plug

  • March 22, 2010 6:11 am

With the onslaught of gadgets the common consumer faces, a subtle and often hidden problem lays in weight, only rearing its ugly head when in times of need. This time of need is of course when plugging into a USB port is needed. Many people use desktop computers day in and day out that feature 2, 4, 8 or more of said ports. But mobile users in particular dont always have such abundant options.

Meet the Infinite USB Plug. The beauty of this plug is that it is small and economical — you only use what you need. A full USB hub on the other hand usually ends up with 2-3 ports used while the remaining ones sit unused.

This design would win over many, I know. Now I just hope somewhere, someone or some manufacturer takes this idea and runs. In the world of gadgets and multi-gadget toting individuals, having “too many” cables is pretty much impossible. Would you buy it?

  • March 21, 2010 11:31 am

Gamer are ya? I’ll admit to my fair share of gaming sessions…ok…everyday. Hey, it keeps me young and is fun to boot. Like many of you out there, staying on the up and up on everything in the gaming world can be a chore at times. Feeds are a great way to stay on top of various sources for gaming news on the go. But even feeds aren’t the best answer. With the dawn of the App Store however, it seems what everyone really wants are apps apps apps. One company joining the mobile app ranks is GameFly with their new “Gamecenter” app for iPhone — and soon, Android and Palm.

If you’re an Android toting gamer, having GameFly’s Gamecenter on your phone is a huge plus — all the gaming oriented news, reviews, pictures, and video you can stomach. As of right now, there isn’t a set in stone release for either the Android or Palm variants. Be sure to check out the vid below of the first commercial highlighting the iPhone version. Now, if only GameFly could get their actual distribution bag of hurt in order…

Any current iPhone/iPod Touch GameFly app users care to share?

iPad lulz

  • March 20, 2010 10:07 am

This is just a funny video to watch after Saturday Morning cartoons, made for a Comm class and uploaded to YouTube. A humorous look at all the iPad can (or can’t) be used for…

“The video is an assignment for our Comm 340 class. The goal was to make a media product with the highest consumption as possible. We completed it March 2, 2010. Our professor is Dr. Warnick, and our group members are: Brian, Justin, Laura, Mike, and Rashel.”

Who would’ve guessed people don’t want IE8?

  • March 19, 2010 11:14 am

Well, it seems that the Windows Web Browser Choice Screen mandated by the European Union to splash on all versions of Windows is working great! According to the latest data from Opera, one of the options given on the main choice screen, their downloads across European Countries has skyrocketed! Opera says it’s “dramatic uptake on downloads.”

They are telling us that their download rates have doubled since this browser download and activation pop-up was initiated. In some countries their downloads have tripled. Giving the EU Windows users a choice has only been going on for a couple weeks now, but will continue well into May for current Windows users, and will be standard for at least 5 years on all new users.

I think this was a great idea, from working on peoples computers and going to their homes and talking to them about what they use their cpus for, I know that they are unaware of different options out there, not only for browsers. There is so much available that the standard user might not know about, and this was a great way to spread the knowledge better web browsing. I think this should be a standard on all computers, in Europe as well as the States!

Steam giving Ubisoft’s new DRM infected titles the shaft over customer outrage?

  • March 19, 2010 9:31 am

Well wouldn’t this be a little drama — Has Steam publicly denounced Ubisoft’s draconian DRM behind the scenes by removing Ubi’s most current titles (Assassins Creed and Silent Hunter V in parctiular) for download? Within the last day, Steam users who have tried to purchase and download both AC 2 and SH V are being greated with “Sorry! An error was encountered while processing your request: This item is currently unavailable in you rregion”.

There could be a very legitimate reason for the removal of these two games that has absolutely nothign to do with Ubi, their DRM, or common sense at all. But given the fact that Ubi has been receiving so much flack for their new craptastic DRM on these two games in particular, it’s certainly not too far fetched to say Steam is protecting their own backsides by more or less “rejecting” Ubi’s poor handling of the situation.

As an outspoken opponent of Ubi’s new DRM, if Steam is in fact removing these infected games fromt their storefront because of the aforementioned DRM, all I can do is sit back and applaud. Because no matter how much someone counters with “speak with your wallet, just don’t buy it”, we all know that “solution” will never work. But perhaps with someone as large as Steam, we’ll have a chance?

Stay tuned, we’ll be following this one…

Breaking News: Apple forces me to get 4 more jobs…

  • March 19, 2010 9:19 am

It looks like Apple is putting the final touches on a brand new 27″ LED Cinema Display, as well as a fatty update to the Mac Pro lineup this June. The Mac Pro has been slated for a refresh for a while, and with the release of the i7 iMac, I would only assume the Mac Pro would be the next in line. It has been reported by AppleInsider that the Cupertino pimps will possibly be sticking with Xeon processors from Intel, supposedly the  Xeon 5600 Series “Gulftown” chips for the guts.

This beast is reported to be buffing up to a whopping 12-cores! At the moment, we are given the option for 4 and 8 core models, with this update it is rumored we’ll be seeing 6 and 12 core models available. With the chips Apple is reportedly going to be using, I would assume we’ll see a hefty price jump, but only time will tell.

Also in June, as I mentioned above,  Apple will be adding a bigger LED Cinema Display to it’s roster. Currently we have the 24″ model introduced back in 2008, we now will have a bigger sexier model measuring in at 27 inches and sporting a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution. It will contain similar components to that of the 27″ iMac recently released, but hopefully won’t mirror the problems we had with that model late last year.

So with these major upgrades to Apples roster, I’m assuming this will make the business world, as well as the fanboy basement parties very happy. We don’t have any pricing info yet, but with the release set for another 3 or so months, I’m sure we’ll be getting something soon.
