4G by way of WiMax is more of niche market here in the US. Currently, the places you can go and consume such speed are few and far between. Coupled with higher costs and relatively little marketing means adoption is slow with no real outlook of a speed increase…
Outside of the States however, adoption is bristling. In Europe for example, WiMax has been around a considerable amount of time longer and rolled out to more areas (of course, the landmass is over all a lot smaller). Things seem to be going so well in fact that a new “WiMax 2″ spec is already in the planning stages.
The new second gen spec promises even faster speeds increasing up to 300Mbps ensuring whatever it is the tech heads of the world want, they can have unencumbered by cords.
Built upon 802.16m wireless technology, WiMax 2 will not only feature faster raw speeds, but reduced latency as well which in many instances is the real test of performance.
Don’t expect to see WiMax 2 networks popping up for at least another couple of years. In the meantime, can we nerds here in the States get some more WiMax please…? Anyone?
How much would you pay for 300Mbps mobile data service?
