Nokia fans, your future isn’t looking too great. At least, that’s the gist I get after reading Mobile-Review’s review of Symbian S^3, the next generation in the Symbian OS platform.
Countless Symbian die-hards are hoping for something revolutionary and truly innovative to challenge the likes of Android, Apple, RIM, and Microsoft. Unfortunately from what I’m seeing, it’s nothing more than some lipstick and a few other minor tweaks here and there. Certainly nothing that is screaming out to me “BUY IT NOW!”
Adding insult to injury, the Mobile-Review piece on Symbian^3 highlights one glaring problem — the phone slows down the more and more you load it with content. Like, noticeably noticeably. It’s worth noting that this is still an early beta product, so hopefully *fingers crossed* the devs responsible for S^3 can get their ducks in a line and quell this nasty problem before it reaches the masses.
Looking at a few other highlights of S^3, I can honestly say that I’m pretty disappointed in what the next generation of Symbian has to offer. I mean, it pretty much looks exactly the same as Symbian of the last 8 years. Is Nokia going to be the next Palm?
Anyone care to add their $.02?
**Update: This morning shortly after writing, Nokia went ahead and officially announced the Nokia N8 complete with the Symbian S^3 that was so uninspiring in the Mobile-Review preview and my thoughts above. Lord help Nokia…
****Update 2: And Nokia responds saying that the firmware on the preview model that Mobile-Reviews had was an extremely early beta product and wasn’t fit for review. Mobile-Review countered with the argument they did in fact have a piece of Nokia N8 hardware with the latest software. School yard bickering…I love it… (Engadget)
