WiMax 2 spec to see 300Mbps speeds. Drool cups of the world unite!

  • April 12, 2010 2:11 pm

4G by way of WiMax is more of niche market here in the US. Currently, the places you can go and consume such speed are few and far between. Coupled with higher costs and relatively little marketing means adoption is slow with no real outlook of a speed increase…

One person’s old cassette tape is another person’s tie…

  • April 12, 2010 1:38 pm

The ultimate form of tech nerdy know how is taking one or more washed up, used gadgets and turning them into something new and useful. In this case, it’s an old cassette tape being turned into a tie, specifically using the actual magnetic tape material inside the cassette.

The actual composition of these “cassette ties” is actually 50% tape 50% thread. But those outside the world of tech, no one’s the wiser.

Netflix continues screwing over customers with delayed new-release rentals compliments of Fox and Universal…

  • April 12, 2010 1:27 pm

Like renting new releases via Netflix soon after they’re released? Well, now you’ll have to either (A) find a new similar service or (B) start pirating that crap because Netflix just made it harder to enjoy the service you pay for. With the help of Fox and Universal, delaying new movie rentals for 28 days after release in hopes of increased physical media sales is the sole motivation behind this move. According to the trio, it’s a “win-win” for everyone, ultimately bringing lower prices.

Forgive me if I don’t understand, but how does fucking over consumers and forcing us to purchase a product we obviously don’t want going to “help” us? How is it “better” for us?

BlackBerry 9105 to feature T9 keypad. Useless?

  • April 12, 2010 11:27 am

Another day, another leaked BlackBerry UAProf document giving us a gaze inside the secretive world of next-gen BlackBerries. Today, we’re once again looking at the Pearl lineup as it makes it’s way into the 9xxx model line, specifically the 9105 BlackBerry. Based on previous inklings and screenshots of this 91xx slimmed down device as well as this new UAProf document, we can now see a bit more clearly. It appears that some carrier in some corner of the world will be receiving a BlackBerry 9105 with a “normal” T9 keypad as noted by the “PhoneKeypad” verbiage in the screenshot above. Normally, either “Qwerty” or “SureType” is present.

Yuck. For me, typing out anything on T9 sounds like a recipe for frustration and disaster. But apparently, RIM sees a market for this form factor/keyboard combo. Hey, whatever works I guess.

BlackBerry users: would you use a T9 BlackBerry?

El Jobso on blocking out Flash from iPhone platform: “We’ve been there before…sub-par results”

  • April 12, 2010 9:34 am

It’s no secret that Steve Jobs hates Flash and isn’t exactly drinking buddies with Adobe’s finest developers. The once subtle, behind the scenes battle between Apple and Adobe has of late, erupted into an all out war with both sides. Name calling, finger pointing, and all out “he said she said” tactics have been resorted to. Jobs has gone on the record several times citing his distaste for Flash in general. But a new comment over the recent changes in the iPhone developers policy concerning 3rd party compiler programs is yet another nail in the “Will Flash ever come to iPhone” coffin…

Have a few bucks to spare? Palm is on the books.

  • April 12, 2010 7:36 am

Now more than ever is the time to pick up a smartphone manufacturer for pennies on the dollar. Palm, according to Bloomberg, is officially up for sale. Managing the exchange of dollars and cents will be Goldman and Frank Quattrone’s Qatalyst Group. It’s not a surprising turn of events really. Palm has been languishing in the gallows for years now.

At the start of webOS’s life back in early/mid-2009, it had a lot of promise and it appeared Palm was back on it’s way to being the market leader it once was. And then stagnation set in.

After the Palm Pre, nothing was done to keep people attached to webOS nor was there and new and exciting hardware in the immediate pipeline. There was the Pixi, but I’d hardly call that “exciting” or “new”.

It’s still sad nonetheless. Hopefully someone with some better know-how in the ‘ol smartphone marketing/development department comes along and picks up the shattered pieces that used to be Palm.

BlackBerry 9800 (Slider?) spied in internal documents.

  • April 11, 2010 9:56 pm

Ok, so these “documents” aren’t necessarily sales flyers for your local carrier destined for launch day. It’s nothing more than that UAProf document that we touched on a few days ago. Except this time, instead of a disappointingly average 93xx bottom-o-the-barrel device, the new device in the spotlight has a lot more to offer. The 9800 as it is not so cleverly disguised, looks to blend the traditional, physical BlackBerry world with the new age, touchy feely generation that has come to learn to use there hands more often than not.

The screen resolution for this device is the Berry standard 360 x 480 (meh). Wireless is chit chat is provided by 3G and 802.11n WiFi, with OS 6.0 to get it all going. No mention of other specs such as RAM/memory or CPU type/speed is yet known. However, judging by previous rumors and BlackBerry code names swirling in the blogosphere, the 9800 has a strong possibility of emerging into civilization as a slider/combo touchscreen-keyboard device. Then again, it could be a Storm 3 and surprise (or underwhelm) us all.

We’ll have to keep following this one.
