It’s one thing for developers to look at Android and say that any updates can easily be ported to older hardware. But it’s an entirely different story if Android employees themselves get caught saying the same thing under the radar. According to the Android Police, a quick chat session they had with Android employees after the I/O event had wrapped up for the day is pretty alarming, if not somewhat common knowledge.
When asked about Froyo support on the G1, the employees being questioned said that Froyo can technically run on the G1 and that there were even several test builds floating around Google HQ developed specifically for the G1′s aging hardware. That little bit should get any G1 user super stoked.
Truth be told, Cyanogen and other Android modders have already been doing this back porting for many months now. It’s all a game of partitions and knowing where to store stuff. Now that Google even admits it can happen even if carriers don’t go through with it on their own, 3rd party devs should make a mad dash to port 2.2 to older hardware asap.
You know, it’s nice to know that the “owner” of the goods — in this case Google “owning” Android — isn’t getting all sue happy and asinine with the developer community as whole like some other companies…*cough*…*cough*…Apple…
