The real winner of AT&T’s new data plans — RIM
Think about it, BlackBerrys have been designed from the ground up for speed and minimalistic data needs. As such, the average BlackBerry user only consumes a paltry 54MB’s of data per month. Compare that to 200+ for most iPhone users and you can see how BlackBerry users are going to save.
It may seem like AT&T is the only one wiping the floor today with good news, but RIM has managed to move AT&T’s good news into their own court, twisting it to highlight the BlackBerry platform’s bird-like appetite for 1′s and 0′s…
RIM PR jumped on board the festivities saying:
These new pricing plans will translate to savings for BlackBerry customers due to the industry-leading efficiency of the BlackBerry platform. Thanks to RIM’s longstanding focus on wireless data efficiency and investment in related technologies and infrastructure, the BlackBerry platform is significantly more efficient than other mobile platforms and this leads to a major advantage for users with tiered pricing plans
RIM’s PR department is all hunky dory over AT&T’s new plans, with new commercials and advertising highlighting that fact in the near future I’m sure. But it’s so great apparently that even co-CEO Jim Balsillie had a few words to say:
“AT&T’s strategic pricing move is great news for BlackBerry smartphone customers,” said Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO, Research In Motion. “We envision a day when all mobile phones are smartphones and we believe AT&T’s new service plans, together with RIM’s leading portfolio of BlackBerry products and services, will help attract a much broader range of consumers.”
So phones with meager data needs are jumping for joy while dare I say more advanced mobile platforms and users are getting the shaft. Yay, let’s celebrate.
Though a $15 data plan for a BlackBerry seems like a mighty fine selling point…
