Special edition R2-D2 DROID 2 and new Moto Droid (1) ROM leaked…

  • July 21, 2010 6:59 am

Where do we start? Eh, how about with the old — the 1st generation DROID. It’s still going strong with plenty of followers and new adopters, so any worries of it falling of the face of the planet are still a bit premature. On that note, Pete Alfonzo (BuglessBeast ROMS) has a new treat for us by way of a fresh ROM built off of the latest source code from Motorola. This new build — FRG01 — is completely deodexed meaning themers and other tweakers can be at peace.

Moving forward, the DROID 2 is starting to increase its medeia presence day by day. Today’s tidbit concerning the upcoming device is reportedly a special edition R2-D2 DROID 2 that will launch alongside a stock DROID 2. Obviously, Moto is milking the Star Wars ties for all its worth. Though I’ll admit, if give the choice, I’d definitely pick up a Moto DROID 2 with R2 on the back. Android and Star Wars — a geek fest in the palm of your hand… This R2 edition D2 has an August 12th release date rumor tagging along with it. We’ll see. Would you purchase a DROID 2 with R2 on the back, or are you the more silent type?

Apple AppWall screensaver, not quite real-time. Still mighty cool.

  • July 21, 2010 6:29 am

I haven’t seen the AppWall in person, but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy its splendor and beautiful eye candy without venturing to California to get a taste. Introducing: The AppWall Screensaver. Created by Polish developer, ” Peter Tuszynski ” (iApp), the AppWall is a pretty damn good copy of Apple’s AppWall that they’ve shown off at WWDC in the past. Though, unlike Apple’s “real” version, AppWall isn’t tied to real-time purchases. Instead, the user can pick several options and categories to which the screensaver can pull the top *insert number here* apps.

After the initial loading is finished, you can sit back and stare at its simple yet captivating beauty. Interested persons can score their own AppWall screensaver for free, right over here.

Swedish Pirate Party launching their own ISP: Pirate ISP. Big brother gets the finger.

  • July 20, 2010 3:03 pm

A company of their word they are. The quite popular minority group, the Pirate Party is certainly garnering their fair share of media attention these days. First it was the sole existence of the party itself. Then it was promises they made stating that an ISP of their own was a future goal. And whataya know, here we are now discussing the formation of Pirate ISP.

Being a legitimate political power with an ISP that helps fund your party is awesome on many levels. Let us not forgot that the overall goal is for consumers and privacy. That of which is the utmost important issue surrounding the creation of Pirate ISP — giving a big middle finger to big brother.

For now, service is limited to 100 beta testers as the party wants to ensure optimum service. Though as time goes on, expect PirateISP to branch out and expand ts user base. Let it be known that their goals as a dominant ISP are rather meager — a minuscule 5% market share. But as the popular mindset goes — quality over quantity — I’d take Pirate ISP any day.

In closing, the Pirate Party has mentioned many times that if/when they had their own ISP, they would host the Pirate Bay. Looks like those plans are finally coming together.

How’s the weather in Sweden these days….?

Droid 2 seen packin’ Froyo (Yay!) and MotoBLUR (wheep)

  • July 20, 2010 12:33 pm

Fancying a DROID but wish the keyboard were a bit more spacious? You’re in luck! Though it’s no secret, the upcoming Droid 2 looks to be a welcome (albeit a bit underwhelming) mild refresh of the popular Android handset that really got Android in the game. From the image above, we can see that apart from the almost dead N1, the Droid 2 will be the only “official” Froyo device on the market — that is, unless VZW/Moto release the Droid X Froyo update ahead of schedule.

Talk of better keyboards and Froyo are all fine and dandy, but the inclusion of Moto BLUR is not. There were rumors early on that Motorola could be slapping BLUR on the Droid 2, though I as well as many others I’m sure were hopping it never materialized. Judging by the pictures and some other anonymous tips however, it appears that the BLUR rumor in particular did materialize. I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand BLUR. It looks cheap, disorganized, and child-like. I’d much rather prefer stock Android as there are plenty of homescreen replacements and themes to fit the bill if I so choose. Not to mention, manufacturer-created skins greatly slow down update releases — a big blow to Android junkies.

But if Moto wants to ruin one of their flagship devices with it, so be it. Are you as put off by BLUR as I am? Discontent for the aforementioned UI aside, the DROID 2 looks to be *the* Android device for those seeking a physical keyboard as well as VZW service. I can’t wait…

Bigger shot after the jump…

Update

When speaking of BLUR on the Droid 2, we’re talking about the tweaked version that’s running on the Droid X — NOT the old Play Skool version found on the Cliq. Though if Moto for some reason did use Play Skool BLUR, god help us…

Power DVD updated to support 2D-to-3D real-time conversion.

  • July 20, 2010 10:25 am

I haven’t really bitten on the whole 3D wave yet. Mainly it’s because I find even the best solutions currently available gimmicky in nature and not really all that great. Another issue I have is having to re-buy a ton of already purchased content in a new 3D format. If you happen to fall into the same boat, Power DVD would like to have a word with you.

The latest Power DVD update brings something very interesting — real-time 2D-to-3D conversion. Not only that, users can select the amount of depth created in their converted movies, whether it be a sublte effect or gargantuan those people are 10 miles apart effect, Power DVD’s latest update has you covered. But of course, all this new fangled 3D geekery will cost you. End users can look to spend between $70-100 USD for the Deluxe or Ultra 3D products. And don’t forget, you’ll still need a 3D capable TV and glasses, so there’s still some strings attached.

Is Power DVD’s latest update enough to inch you closer to the 3D mania now that scores of older 2D movies can get an extra dimension added in real-time?
