You may recall late last week an article that showed the LG Optimus potentially getting UMA calling features. (Quickrecap: UMA calling allows cellular calls to be made over WiFI and then transfer between the two technologies as you move from local network to cellular network.) It looks like the proof is slowly building, as a new series of training documents has leaked showing several slides of a new Android WiFi calling app.
Unlike UMA that is currently available on most of T-Mo’s feature phone lineup (save for a few other smartphones like BlackBerries), this new Android-capable version has two major differences…–>
- Calls will not transfer from WiFi to cellular and vice versa. Leave the WiFI network and your call drops. Similarly, walk into a WiFi network and your call will not be handed off from the cellular network.
- This new WiFi calling won’t be available for all Android devices, but “select” devices instead. According to a separate image sent in to TmoNews (**Image after the break), it appears the upcoming G2 may be the first device to ship with this new software. It could also be possible that the G2 won’t ship with the WiFi calling app and will be installed via a future OTA update.
Either way, it’s nice to see any type of native, UMA calling on Android as we look back on 2 years of absence. What do you guys think? Is the G2 going to be the first device to feature the new service/app or is TMO going to push it out in droves via OTA updates?
