For those who prefer renting to purchasing movies or TV episodes, Apple’s announcement regarding the new AppleTV and rental-only business model likely made you jump for joy in the streets. Right from the start, a slew of big name companies were on board except one — Warner Bros. While they’re not the only kind on the block, they’re certainly a major player. So it’s with great disappointment that I ruin you, the rental-loving readers’ day. Warner Bros WILL NOT be renting out shows on the new AppleTV. Apparently, they hate money. Contrary to what they’ll claim of course.
You see, their greed is repulsive. They think the tens of millions hundreds of millions they would make with an iTunes $0.99 rental plan isn’t enough. That’s fine. Warner Bros. Execs and shareholders think they’re helping their bottom line when in fact they’re hurting it. Instead of people getting the content they want and how they want on their AppleTV, many will instead fire up their torrent app of choice and get the episode and possibly the entire season for free. You see Warner Bros. (and every other big media company who put greed over consumers), when you screw over consumers, they screw you back. Have fun with that…

If you follow Gadgetsteria on a rather consistent basis, you’ll know I have a thing for racing games — Forza and Gran Turismo in particular. Since Forza 2 came onto the scene, I’ve largely ignored Gran Turismo (any version) mainly due to the damage modeling and more precise physics in Forza. There’s something about GT’s 200mph wall bouncing that just isn’t very…real. However, GT 5 is changing all of that. The damage modeling that we’ve seen so far looks kind of cheap and pretty unrealistic. The physics, however, are leaps and bounds better than even GT 4. But there’s something even better that should make GT5 the kind of racing sims at least for a few months — dynamic weather.
It’s not a new development and has actually been demoed several times before. However, the video waiting for you just after the break is a a thing of beauty. Not only does it feel real, it looks like it will add a completely new set of challenges. Grab the popcorn and jump on in…

Say that title 5x fast…
PhotoFast, makers of the previous speed demon, the G-Monster, have upped the ante with a new PCI-e-based storage medium that is fast. Really fast. The PowerDriveLSI will push the limits of what you think “possible” is: 1.4GBps (Yes, that’s a GB+ per second) reads and 1.5GBps writes. There are no words to describe how insanely quick that is. Ok, perhaps there is: 2 Full 700MB CD’s…every second.
My mouth is like Niagara Falls right now, no joke. Though as you can imagine, such speed and bleeding edge tech will be wholly unaffordable for pretty much everyone at $17,500 USD. But hey, being on the forefront of technology is never cheap…

Queue music: “Another one bites the dust…” Having ability to set individual SMS tones to contacts is not a hard thing to do. Apple could have done it all the way back in iPhone OS 1.0 days. Yet for some reason they decided that iOS 4.2 was “the one”. It’s kind of embarrassing to be even remotely excited over such a feature. Nevertheless, it’s nice to see Apple going back through the long list of complaints regarding missing features in iOS and finally delivering on some of those good ‘ol original ones, even if they are as minor as individual SMS tones.
Next up: Giving iPhone users the ability to create custom SMS tones. Because no, Apple. 6 different tones aren’t enough…

If you’re in the market for a portable gaming device from Sony, go ahead and get one. Wait, what? With news of a PSP2 in the post title, shouldn’t I be advising you to wait? Usually that would be the case. However, it’ll probably be quite a while before we see any PSP2. Hell, Sony hasn’t even announced one yet. With that said though, they don’t have to because the company behind Mortal Kombat did.
At PAX2010, Executive Producer Shaun Himmerick went ahead and let out a few opinions on the in-house PSP2 device they have for testing/development purposes, claiming that it was a “powerful machine” and citing a 60fps figure. Being that the PSP internal hardware didn’t really change from PSP to PSP Go and that same hardware is many years old, I would hope some newfound speed is finding it’s way into Sony’s mobile lineup.
Even though we don’t have any specs, pictures, or official recognition from Sony, we can rest assured that the devs working on the games that makes said hardware tick will keep us in the loop — albeit a small, rarely talked about loop. Still, I’ll take a small something over a vast nothing any day. Looks like we still have something to look forward to folks…
