Unknown Apple devices again spotted in AppleTV firmware.

  • September 28, 2010 9:52 am

Is the CDMA iPhone real? It’s really only a matter of time before we see one. Apple would be stupid to ignore the amount of VZW users in the US. That’s a ton of money itching for some iLove. And maybe, just maybe one of these mystery devices mentioned in the recently released AppleTV firmware is it. Truth be told, these mysterious devices were actually reported back in April by BGR. At that time, however, we all thought that it was probably different forms of the iPhone 4 that would all launch simultaneously. That obviously didn’t play out.

With that said, there still isn’t much to go by except a few lines cryptic internal labeling and a dash of hopes and dreams. As long as Apple continues on the current model labeling scheme, (and taking into account that the iPhone 4 is model 3,1), the 3,2 and 3,3 indicate a rather minor change in hardware. Could be a new antenna design (unlikely) or it could be that highly talked about CDMA iPhone. Even more out there — it could be a T-Mo compatible phone.

What do you guys think?

If stock Android looked like this, we wouldn’t need “skins”.

Android has been receiving an increasing amount of flack as of late for the surging use of custom, 3rd party skins. The developers of the skins say they aid in usefulness to the customer as well as making Android look better. The former is mildly debatable while the latter is a blatant lie. I have yet to see an Android skin that makes me want it in return for slowed and delayed updates.

But Google could easily fix this problem — outlaw custom skins and make manufacturers leave Android untouched. Google king pin, Eric Schmidt has already stated that they won’t do that. Soooo we can only hope Android 3.0′s claimed redesign is good enough manufacturers leave their hands off. A dreamer I may be. But if stock Android looked anything like this MIUI ROM (available for Nexus One) we may just see the end of custom skins. Before you judge a book by it’s cover, make sure you watch the video inside first…

Old and busted: Christmas decorations. New hottness: Steampunk earth boring vehicle busting through driveway for Halloween.

Oh noz…another one of those non-gadget posts has infiltrated the front page. Never fear, this is actually pretty cool. A guy named Peter has this insanely over the top idea of decorating his house with an earth boring vehicle breaking through his driveway — and all for Halloween. Peter’s past works include a sunken pirate ship and destroyed locomotive. Clearly, subtle is nowhere in this guys repertoire. But that’s A-OK in my book. Who doesn’t like a cleverly decorated house, regardless of holiday? The fact that it’s Halloween, unique, and Steampunk means it’s just about as awesome as it gets.

Getting ready for the big day means money. As such, Peter is raising funds through kickstart to get his idea off the ground. (Better hurry Peter, Halloween is creeping ever closer….)

**Hop inside to see Peter’s past works such as the sunken pirate ship and crashed locomotive…

New webOS devices spied via testing certificaions.

It’s been quite a while since we’ve seen an honest to goodness new webOS device. (No, the Palm Pre –> Pre Plus doesn’t count…) Thanks to some leaky gates at third-party tester TÜV Rheinland, we have two new models to look forward to: the P102UNA and P102EWW. For references sake, the Pre and Pre Plus carried numbers P100 and P101 respectively. Unfortunately, some vague numbers are all we have at this point. No hardware specs. No software specs. No concept renders. Notta. But hey, look at the bright side. It’s nice to see Palm isn’t just talking out of their ass and that they’re actually working on bringing something new to the market.

What’s your guess? Holiday season 2010? Spring 2011?

Verizon Droid devices already prepped for 4G?

  • September 27, 2010 8:39 pm

Just because something is found within the software of a device doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll ever see it go live. Case in point: 4G in the Droid Incredible. It’s not marketed as a 4G phone and Verizon doesn’t have that large of a 4G network actually live…yet. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean the parties involved with such a rollout can’t prepare, right?

I doubt the Incredible has a 4G radio. We would have heard about it by some iFixit teardown by now. But a hidden 4G settings menu within the Incredible shows that VZW is at least thinking ahead — really far ahead. With that said, the general consensus is not to expect any 4G/LTE VZW phones until midway through 2011.

Still, it’s cool to see the buried treasures hidden within the hacker friendly Android OS every now and then.

Unnamed HTC-built Droid w/ sliding keyboard coming to Verizon.

No, you’re not looking at the Droid 2 World Edition. This is an HTC-branded as-of-yet unannounced Android device that has the internal model name of “ADR6325″. By now, your standard top of the line Android handset is going to come with at least a 1GHz processor, 5MP camera, (and in the case of sliders) a nice, touchy, tactical keyboard. Powering this mystery unit will be the tried and true Android 2.2. I must say, the all black and red color scheme looks pretty slick on this Droid. WIth that said, I also like the more “feminine” looking white on the Droid 2 World Edition. Hey, what can I say; I’m pretty easy to please.

Which one will you choose: This all black beauty or the globe trotting World Edition? Check out more pics over in the gallery at BGR.

BlackBerry Theme Studio 6 breaks cover!

  • September 27, 2010 6:37 pm

While all the news of RIM’s keynote today may be centered around the PlayBook, RIM has many other fish in their basket. One aspect of the BlackBerry OS that has constantly grown year after year is that of themes. Custom themes give the aging OS a fresh face that can at times, hide the wrinkles and blemishes. With that said, the BlackBerry Theme Development kit has been heavily tweaked. Theme developers can look forward to new added support for BlackBerry OS 6 elements, the ability to customize Facebook/Twitter/BBM updates in the today screen, options to configure time-based wallpapers w/ an accompanying wizard, a faster batch process for importing pictures, and an easy to use BlackBerry App World export option that automatically zips everything up in the appropriate file type.
