White iPhone 4 vanishes from purchase page, hopes and dreams along with it…

  • October 28, 2010 7:46 am

Oh boy. The white iPhone 4 saga is getting downright ridiculous now with this on-again-off-again action. First it was delayed, and then it was delayed again. For good measure, Apple delayed it a third time, though never stating as to why it was many months behind schedule. And then it started to come out that it wasn’t necessarily a paint issue (as rumored in the past), but an issue with the translucent white back case leaking in too much light and causing the camera to glitch out when trying to determine white balance and such.

But putting all of that aside, it appeared as if redemption was closer than expected with a recent update to the Apple Store app including the white iPhone 4 in it’s list of items for purchase or pre-order. But it appears if that was short lived and that the white iPhone 4 ship has sailed, for the white iPhone 4 has now been pulled from the very same app.

Looks like those rumors of Apple canceling the white iPhone 4 and stalling with delay after delay after delay might be true after all…

Be social. Be clean. The Tweet Towel.

  • October 28, 2010 7:29 am

How much do you really love being social? Are you a Twitter-holic? Do you want to bathe yourself in the random words of 140-character messages? Well hot damn, you’re in luck. WeAreWhatWeDo.org has got just the “device” for you — a Tweet Towel.

Now before you get too geeked, we’ll stress that this towel is in no way connected to the outside world via wire or wireless waves. So no, you can’t tweet on your towel — kind of. You can have special phrases and tweets embroidered on the towel. So in a sort of convoluted way, you are tweeting with a towel. It just isn’t real-time.

Looks like a great Christmas gift for that social butterfly/digital junkie in your life. £10 (~$15.79 USD) is all it takes — you just have to wait for the Tweet Towel to become officially available for sale. How about a couple?

Another battery love story: 30% longer runtime brought to you by Titanium Oxide.

  • October 28, 2010 7:20 am

We’ve seen this scenario before — batteries are languishing behind technological improvements in our digital devices. Roughly every couple of months, we see some story detailing an all new method of creating/charging batteries or some new material that supposedly will increase runtime considerably. And yet many years and several stories later, we’re still left with this pathetic Lithium-Ion gig we’ve been using for the last several years. Though like clockwork, another new spin on the traditional battery is hitting the airwaves.

Bought to us by talented researches of the Japan’s Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), this new battery promises to make our digital-powered lives many times better. For this tale, we’ll be looking at the anode material. Specifically, the new oxide negative-electrode material is comprised of a titanium oxide where as current batteries use Lithium titanate. The chief improvements of this new material over the latter include enhanced battery capacity, lower cost, and increased life span. Sounds like a win-win to me!

I’m already impressed with the runtime of my iPhone 4 compared to other smartphones I’ve had in recent years. But I’m sure it’s nothing compared to what a battery powered by the above could achieve. Here’s to hoping this tech makes it into our hands sometime this century…

Apple to succeed where Google failed: reshuffling power in the U.S. cellular market?

  • October 27, 2010 7:27 pm

The Nexus One joint project between Google and HTC was a start of better things to come. While our mobile-loving friends overseas enjoy healthy competition in the mobile market, we here in the states don’t have much to go with. Yeah, four large carriers is at face value, competition. But the sad state of affairs is that differences in cellular technologies more or less render *easy* carrier switching all but impossible. But Apple is rumored to be working with SIM card maker, Gemalto on a new implanted (read: non user-replaceable) SIM card.

While it sounds odd to us Americans, a competitive cellular market does actually exist in some corners of the earth — Europe in particular. And with Apple’s new built-in SIM cards, a new era in mobile phone usage could be born…

Firefox 4 release slips into 2011.

  • October 27, 2010 4:41 pm

These days, if you’re slow, you’re dead. Once your product falls behind in a release roadmap, it’s often far too hard to actually catch up. Even worse, your competitors will use your bad luck against you, pushing their agenda even harder. With that said, Mozilla is going to have a busy New Years. Instead of celebrating the release of their biggest update in many, many months, they’ll be preparing. Firefox 4 has officially been pushed back into 2011.

The original release had a late-2010 date attached to it. But software is fickle. As such, bugs and general development goals are the reason that we won’t be welcoming the new year with a new FF. But it’s not all bad. Those of you who aren’t against beta products can get in on the action with the latest Firefox beta. It’s actually pretty darn stable — enough so to be your daily browser. But if it’s a legit, honest to goodness release you’re looking for, don’t stand around waiting. There’s still 3 more betas due for release, with the 1st Release Candidate pegged for early 2011.

Any Firefox users a bit letdown?
