Prepare for Ludicrous Speed: Droid 2/X overclocked to 2GHz!

  • October 22, 2010 12:46 pm

While we may have been disappointed with recent attempts to overclock a Droid X and only slightly intrigued by a decent G2 showing, this latest tale of Android rooting/overclocking fun is quite the face melter — literally.

Two dudes — Matt4542 and Joe from Team DeFuse have successfully pushed one Droid X and one Droid 2 up to 2.0GHz. That’s freakin’ insane! Even more insane is that these guys think it’s possible to make this overclock “completely stable”. That will be mighty impressive for sure.

Of course, with a 3.7″ and 4.3″ display already relinquishing long run times to mere dreams, screaming along at 2.0GHz certainly can’t help either. Hop on past for a quick video showing the madness in action…

All of you Foursquare users out there, sit down. There’s no possible way you can “top” this — Astronaut Douglas H. “Wheels” Wheelock has just checked in from the International Space Station, 220 miles above the surface of Earth. Thank you and good day…

Windows Phone 7 Weather Channel App Looks Really Good!

  • October 22, 2010 10:12 am

You know, I’m really warming up to Windows Phone 7. Not only is the UI a breath of fresh air, but the whole blend of Android’s “open” nature and iOS’s streamlined mindset are mighty compelling. But now there’s another thing I envy Windows Phone 7 for having — an actual eye pleasing Weather Channel app.

Features: Animated, interactive maps | weather data in hourly, 36-hour, and 10-day forcasts — current conditions, wind, humidity, UV level, dew point, visibility, and sunrise & sunset | panoramic screen view with weather images as backgrounds | traffic cameras for local roads | ability to share weather information via email | share favorite locations | video section with local and regional video forecasts | Severe weather center with updates and damaging and dangerous weather.

If you frequent Gadgetsteria, you already know I have a straight up addiction for Angry Birds. It’s literally the greatest thing since the wheel. And today, that addiction is spreading to another pool of victims. Angry Birds is now officially available for Symbian S^3. For the more detail specific readers out there, the S^3 specific version of Angry Birds features 105 levels of bird slinging, pig slayin’ fun, and is dropping as version 1.21.

Angry Birds for Symbian S^3 can be found in the Ovi Store for $2.99.

Steve clears the air regarding “deprecated Java”.

  • October 22, 2010 9:38 am

The web was up in arms yesterday over a statement on an updated Apple Developer Documentation detailing how Java on OS X would be deprecated (read: outdated, with the ceasing of updates) moving forward. Naturally, with countless Java-based programs already deployed for OS X, the associated Java-developers were concerned. Almost instantaneously, rumors started circulating as to the cause of the decision, with reasonings ranging from keeping Java apps out of the new Mac store to Apple just being Apple.

But a clearer picture is forming. A concerned developer, Scott Fraser, from Portico Systems fired off an email to Steve Jobs concerning the issue at hand, to which Steve replied with the following:

“Sun (now Oracle) supplies Java for all other platforms,” Jobs replied. “They have their own release schedules, which are almost always different than ours, so the Java we ship is always a version behind. This may not be the best way to do it

Fair enough. It sounds harmless. Are your nerves calmed, or do you have conspiracy theories still flinging around in your cranium?

New Android YouTube app requires 2.2 (Froyo)

  • October 22, 2010 8:09 am

Video junkies on Android might want to rethink their device choice if the new YouTube app is one of the crowning jewels in their eye, for it has one big limitation — It requires Android 2.2 or later. Even though the latest estimates put Android 2.2 adoption at 30%, that still renders a huge swath of Android users ineligible.

For the “winners” however, the new stand-alone YouTube app does have some new notable features: landscape and portrait viewing, channel info, ability to like videos, and the ability to share videos via Buzz, Facebook, and Twitter.

Pretty nifty stuff. Though it’s fairly minor if you really think about it. Hardly worth crying over if you don’t have 2.2 yet. Meanwhile that fact — the lack of Android 2.2 for your device — is something I’d consider a little more saddening.
