The Blackberry we’ve all been waiting for is finally here! The much rumored touch + qwerty BlackBerry Dakota aims to top RIM’s smartphone lineup by bridging both sides of the company’s portfolio into one do-it-all device. The specs look promising: Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Tri-band UMTS, 2.8″ 640 x 480 capacitive touchscreen display, 4GB internal storage and 768MB of RAM, WiFi b/g/n 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies, Bluetooth, 5-megapixel camera with HD video recording, accelerometer, proximity sensor OS 6.1, mobile hotspot support, and NFC (Near Field Communication). But the most exciting feature that piqued our interest is a return to the Bold 9000′s size and form factor — slightly wider than the new crop of 97xx devices giving it a wider keyboard and screen.
There isn’t any mention of battery size or processor which worries us slightly. RIM desperately needs to stop relying on the dinosaur 600MHz processor that has been stuffed in BlackBerries for the last couple of years. Not to mention, seeing such a fine device powered by something so undesirable would be a shame. The focus on thinness in recent years has often come at the expense of battery life as they are the first things to be downsized. Nevertheless, this is a huge thing for RIM. It’s just too bad they couldn’t release something that was truly “quantum leaps ahead of the competition” — something a QNX Dakota would surely classify as, wouldn’t you say?
