We all knew it was coming — the MacBook Pro refresh. And when the “We’ll Be Right Back” Sticky note started popping up on our browsers when going to Apple’s online store, we knew the weeks of waiting were about to pay off. So what exactly can you, the consumer, get from these new Sandy Bridge-powered laptops? Hop inside for the full rundown…
13″ MacBook Pro
As the earlier leaks suggested, the 13″ MacBook Pro finally gets a much needed update with all new Core i5 and i7 dual-core processors ranging from 2.4GHz-2.7GHz. Hard drive space starts at 320GB and reaches 500GB on the higher end 13 incher. Like always, the baby MBP doesn’t receive any dedicated graphics. However, Intel’s new 3000 series of integrated graphics are said to be leaps and bounds better than past offerings.
15″ MacBook Pro
Moving up a couple inches to the 15.4″ MacBook Pro brings several worthy upgrades. Most notably is the move to all Core i7 processors — no more Core i5 choices. Also on tap is new found graphical power thanks to AMD’s Radeon HD 6xxxM mobile cards. Specifically, the $1,799 model ships with a 2.0GHz quad-core Core i7, AMD Radeon HD6490M w/ 1GB of memory, and 500GB hard drive. The higher end $2,199 MBP ups the ante with a faster 2.2GHz quad-core i7 processor, AMD Radeon 6750M graphics, and 750GB hard drive. For the real speed demons, all of the 15″ and 17″ MBPs offer 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB SSDs as add-on options.
17″ MacBook Pro
In actuality, the 17″ MacBook Pro is just a physically bigger 15″ MBP in that it features the same processor choices, GPU, RAM, and hard drive as its 15″ family member. The only real difference is the price — $2,499. Is the added screen real state worth the extra cash? That’s for you to decide.
What are you going to do, upgrade? As me, I’m off to eBay/Craigslist to find a new home for my older 13″ MBP and pick up one of the new SB-powered ones. Who’s with me?
