Disqus For iPhone Inches Closer. Bonus: Screenshot.

  • April 30, 2011 10:32 pm

If you’re a site admin or blogger who has to tend to a comment or two via Disqus, you’ve no doubt come to wonder when, if every they would launch their iOS app. For many months now their website has said “coming soon” with no mention of when and no updates to speak of. But thanks to one iOS dev whose been working on the project, Jarod Luebbert, we’ve at least got a screenshot of the upcoming app and a new timeline — very soon. (via: @jarodl)

We here at Gadgetsteria use Disqus for our comment system as we find it the best option for our needs. Accessing it via iOS, however, leaves much to be desired. Hopefully this little app being cooked up by Jarod fits the bill. In short: we’re stoked!

Jarod says to keep an eye out for it, which to us means an impending release. We’ll let you know as soon as it drops.

Sony To Hold Press Conference Tomorrow Covering PSN Hack.

  • April 30, 2011 2:06 pm

Sony’s been doing a decent job of keeping users abreast of the ongoing PSN hack and outage, though public outcry has continued to grow. Some may argue that no matter what Sony does, customer backlash is unavoidable given the circumstances at hand. Nevertheless, Sony is going to try their damnedest by officially addressing the world via a press conference tomorrow (2pm local Japan time/1am EST). It is there that Sony’s Executive Deputy President, Kazuo Hirai, will officially acknowledge the ongoing crisis, information pertaining to the investigation, as well as the company’s information management system and when customers can expect services to resume. We’d also assume Hirai will at least touch on areas in which Sony is going to compensate disgruntled users.

Check back here at 1am EST for the latest.

Icy Comes Back From The Dead. New Beta Now Available For Download!

  • April 29, 2011 9:07 pm

Cydia has provided an awesome opportunity from App Store rejects and app developers looking to offer something above and beyond what Apple “allows” on consumers’ iOS devices. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t other options in 3rd party app stores.

One such early competitor to Cydia was Icy. Throughout the last many months, Cydia took off while development on Icy slowed and eventually came to a halt — which was a shame seeing as how Icy was the more polished, faster 3rd party iOS app store.

Good news — it’s back, thanks to Samtulp6 and iPwnM0nster from Infini_Dev. Icy 1.4.7 will officially be launched next week, but if you’re chompin’ at the bit to get in on the action now you can do so by adding “http://repo.ispazio.net” as a Cydia repo. If you decide to take the plunge, be sure to let us know how it goes!

HTC Thunderbolt Update Coming On May 3rd.

  • April 29, 2011 8:57 pm

Good news HTC Thunderbolt users — An update is coming your way on May 3rd. The version number is 1.13.605.7 and contains baseband 1.16.00.0402w_1. Notable fixes include:

  • Accurate location is displayed when accessing the Weather Widget.
  • “Backup Assistant” is correctly displayed in the Application menu.
  • Stability improvements for data centric applications such as Facebook, KAYAK, Yahoo! Mail, My Verizon and more.
  • Quickly load GPS updates for Google Maps and VZ Navigator.
  • Device activation timing improved.
  • SMS and MMS messages are stored properly in the Messaging Application (Inbox, Sent, etc.)
  • Enhanced data connectivity when accessing the Verizon 3G network

Hopefully Verizon and Motorola tossed in a legitimate 3G/4G switch as well as some battery-saving tweaks to boot. The Thunderbolt is pretty much the coolest Android device right now thanks to it’s LTE capabilities. The battery, however, leaves quite a lot to be desired. More at Verizon.

HP Veer Spied In White!

  • April 29, 2011 5:14 pm

The standard black HP Veer has been known about for a while now as has it’s rumored May 2nd release date. The Veer’s other coat of paint, however, is a surprise. PocketNow found an image with HP’s mini-smartphone packing a much lighter hue, following the popular trend of lighter colored handsets as of late.

The Veer is too small in our opinion, though we certainly won’t write it off without some one-on-one time. At the very least, we’ll say that this leaked white Veer is better looking than it’s darker sibling. What do you think?

With Nothing Left To Lose, RIM Leaks The BlackBerry Bold Touch.

  • April 29, 2011 5:06 pm

RIM’s handling of the PlayBook wasn’t exactly the most graceful (or complete) launch in the company’s history. Add the above image of their unannounced BlackBerry Bold Touch to the list of RIM’s recent folies. RIM wasn’t supposed to officially unveil the “next-gen” BlackBerry until BlackBerry World next week. Unfortunately for RIM, someone got a bit antsy and posted the pages a bit early. As of now, however, the pages have already been pulled. We’d say “the damage has been done” but we’ve already seen the Bold Touch a few times over the last couple of months so there wasn’t really any surprise to be had. Nevertheless, BlackBerry users should be pleased to get this official, unofficial confirmation.

Wireless Tether Now Actively Blocked By U.S. Carriers?

  • April 29, 2011 4:58 pm

If you’re currently “stickin’ it to the man” and using an unauthorized tethering app to get around your carrier’s official means of tethering devices, get ready for a rude awakening. While we’ve already heard of MyWifi users on iOS receiving messages from AT&T about changing to a supported tethering plan, we’ve yet to hear of anything on the Android side — until now.

Reports are beginning to circulate that a number of wireless carriers including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon are all blocking access to Wireless Tether via the Android Market. We can personally confirm that our AT&T Captivate was unable to find the rooted tethering app. However, we got around that little complication by side-loading said app outside of the market. While that gets us past the first problem of not being able to access the app, it won’t help us should AT&T change our plan to the $45/month Data Pro plan that supports tethering.

News of wireless carriers coming down hard on tethering apps for smartphones shouldn’t come as any surprise really. We all know they love to double and tripple dip into our paychecks. It’s a sad part of the capitalist economy that we frankly can’t do much about.
