TweetDeck 2.0 For iOS Released!

  • April 26, 2011 6:54 am

Power users of Twitter: TweetDeck for iOS 2.0 is out! The 2.0 numbering does not signify a major revision. Instead, the TweetDeck team went back to the drawing board and re-built the application from scratch. All the standard tweet/re-tweet/DM/@replies are here as are numerous other features including:

  • iOS 4 Features: mutlitasking and Retina Display graphics
  • Multi-touch gestures and navigation
  • Threaded tweet/conversation view
  • A much sleeker, nice UI
  • Facebook Integration: Wall posts, messages, likes
  • Faster and more stable

TweetDeck 2.0 is better than the first-gen app in every way. We’ll add that we really love the new UI which pulls from the Android version of the app as it is far nicer to look at. And seeing as how we spend quite a lot of time on Twitter, that’s a good thing.

iPad users sit tight. Your update is still in the works.

Hit up the App Store now to get the new TweetDeck 2.0 for iPhone and let us know what you think! Video walkthrough after the break…

End Of An Era: Last Typewriter Factory Officially Closes.

  • April 26, 2011 6:23 am

You may have written off typewriters years ago, but truth be told someone was still producing them over in India. A company by the name of Godrej & Boyce in Mumbai released an official statement saying that the writing is on the wall, and that computers are here to stay.

“From the early 2000 onwards, computers started dominating. All the manufacturers of office typewriters stopped production, except us. Till 2009, we used to produce 10,000 to 12,000 machines a year.

We stopped production in 2009 and were the last company in the world to manufacture office typewriters. Currently, the company has only 500 machines left. The machines are of Godrej Prima, the last typewriter brand from our company, and will be sold at a maximum retail price of Rs 12,000.”

The future of Godrei & Boyce — refridgerators.

Claimed Motorola Targa Captured On Camera.

  • April 25, 2011 10:54 pm

Rumors of a quad-core beast of an Android device with the name “Targa” may have gotten a shot of credibility tonight. A couple of leaked images published by Droid-Life show one of four to five test devices currently running around Motorola HQ with a qHD display and quad-core mobile processor.

From what we can see in the photos, the overall look isn’t that different from a Droid X/X2. Though being a test device, Motorola could have simply taken a DX/X2 body and crammed some newage internals inside and called it a day. Of course, we’ve got until early 2012 before quad-core phones start becoming a public reality. (Read: keep playin’ that waiting game…)

Native Check-ins Coming To Windows Phone 7?

  • April 25, 2011 10:23 pm

Microsoft hasn’t exactly been a wealth of information concerning the Windows Phone 7 “Mango” update scheduled to drop later this year with plenty of new features in tow. But that doesn’t mean we as aspiring nerds can’t figure out some of said features ahead of time.

A tweet by @KADacey includes the verbiage “Checked in at Microsoft Studio F” and “Via Windows Phone (via Windows Live)INT”. That looks like native check-in support to us. Of course, we’d like to see some Facebook or Foursquare check-in support baked in seeing as how they’re the largest check-in services by far. Nevertheless, WP7 users will likely take anything they can get. Not to mention, we’re sure there will be some cross-sharing service or feature at some point in the future.

The wait for Mango continues… (What would you like to see included?)

TweetBot Updated To 1.0.2. Features Continue Rolling In.

  • April 25, 2011 9:34 pm

The TweetBot app we initially previewed earlier this month has another semi-important update set to debut very soon (if it hasn’t already). TweetBot 1.0.2 brings several important fixes and features to the table.

  • Greatly improved performance when switching accounts.
  • Profile view cleaned up to make it more obvious how to see a user’s timeline as well as including tweet count.
  • Fixed performance slow down when app is running for a long time.
  • Made it much more obvious that we have support for Read it Later and Instapaper.
  • Added “Tiny” font size.
  • Readability support.
  • Posterous support.

The real exciting stuff in 1.1, however — Landscape support. The TweetBot devs level with the masses a bit and own up to being a two man band. As such, updates are slow coming, though thoroughly tested. The team also states that Push Notifications are on their minds, but it too works back to being a small two man team. Without the ample monetary reserves or server space on hand, the network for Push Notifications can be quite costly. The devs propose that there will likely be a small yearly fee simply to keep the lights on. Some may complain and move elsewhere. But we here at GS will gladly pay for quality.

Let us know how the updated 1.0.2 version of TweetBot fairs on your iDevice.

In Depth: The Environment, CO2 Consumption, And Commute Greener!

  • April 25, 2011 8:53 pm

Planet Earth has a finite number of resources and amount of said resources to give. Once everything has been exhausted, we face larger issues than deciding which Starbucks location to blog away at. Seriously. Environmental issues are cause for concern, regardless of what you label it.

Consumers have choices however. We can car pool, walk, use renewable energy, etc. Though it would be both handy and interesting to see how much CO2 you as a human being (or company) actually pump into the atmosphere, wouldn’t it? One such app that allows you to do just that is Commute Greener, a joint venture between Volvo Group and New Zealand based Pocket Web, a company who specializes in location-based information intertwined with social media.

Over the past few days, we’ve had the pleasure of talking with the founders of Commute Greener, Michael Heinzel and Alexander Koeppen about what exactly Commute Greener’s updated service can do for the average consumer as well as large corporate and where the pair see the app going in the future. Hop on past for the full interview…

Dell Precision M4600/6600 Info Leaks. Mobile Power Plants Pack A Wallop.

  • April 25, 2011 6:59 pm

Dell runs a leaky ship it seems. After an earlier roadmap leaked detailing Dell’s upcoming tablet endeavors, it is now the company’s Precision line of laptops that is stepping out a bit early.

The newest M4600 mobile workstation is a 15.6″ beast that will accept hardware up to a quad-core Intel Core i7 Extreme 2920M, 32GB of RAM and either a 1 GB AMD FirePro M5950 or 1GB Nvidia Quadro 2000M. Moving things along further with the M6600 brings you all the bells and whistles on the M4600 as well as the option to equip a 2GB AMD FirePro M8900 or 4GB Nvidia Quadro 5010M.

Both laptops will ship with 2 x USB 2.0 and 2 x USB 3.0 ports, eSATA, and IEEE 1394 inputs. Your standard assortment of wired and wireless network protocols are hear as well.

Pricing and release information aren’t available quite yet. Though judging by the power packed within, expect corporate sized expenditures (read: really freakin’ expensive).
