T-Mobile G2X Roaming Woes and Uncapping The Atrix 4G.

  • April 27, 2011 12:39 pm

AT&T users with the Atrix 4G have no doubt heard a thing or two about AT&T artificially gimping your phones to 2G speeds while simultaneously advertising a real “4G” experience. Regardless of your stance on the situation, it’s most certain that you at least want the phone you paid for. Lucky for you the talented devs at XDA have a solution. A simple radio flash of radio version 1.87 from the latest Telstra 1.4.2 firmware update is all it takes to go from abysmal 0.3Mbps uploads to a stout 2Mbps HSUPA upload speed.

Fans on “the other carrier GSM carrier” have an issue of their own. The G2X was apparently labeled and marketed wrong — it is not in fact a quad-band 3G phone. Support for T-Mobile, AT&T, and global GSM networks is provided in 2G mode only. Once in 3G mode it’s T-Mobile’s 1700MHz AWS band and foreign markets that are being catered to. G2X owners who were hoping to unlock said device and move over to AT&T will be sorely disappointed to know that it is indeed impossible due to a hardware limitation.

Any Atrix or G2X owners care to speak out?

Native FaceBook And Twitter Apps Coming To PlayBook

  • April 27, 2011 10:53 am

The PlayBook may be a month late and a few grand short, but that doesn’t mean there still isn’t potential to be had. The lack of apps is a crucial problem for RIM’s first-gen tablet at this point, but things are bound to change for the better, and soon.

We already know Android app support is coming. But now we can add two new native applications coming out of Waterloo — Twitter and Facebook. The revealing comes courtesy of RIM via the BlackBerry PlayBook Security Technical Overview, and details certain apps and services that will run in “personal mode” as opposed to work mode. Twitter and Facebook make the cut.

It’ll be a huge step for consumers to have the two aforementioned services in native form as going old school/”the real way” via the browser isn’t the best experience. As much as we love standard web apps across platforms, native apps just makes things all around more enjoyable. Stay tuned…

Apple has finally come forward to officially answer the various questions being thrown out by lawmakers, consumers, and companies worldwide, and state the obvious — the location tracking is for location-based services in attempts to make them more accurate and useful. Windows 8 Settings Panel Shows Off More WP7 Flair.

  • April 27, 2011 8:33 am

Another day, another leak of containing Windows 8 features. This time, however, we get a handy little video! The content of which focuses on the Windows 8 control panel and the new Windows Phone 7/Metro-esque style that Redmond is dishing out all over the next gen OS in hopes of making it more tablet/finger-friendly.

While we’re definitely digging the new look, the scrolling column — That is tiny we might add! — is a terrible idea. It makes us think of the early days of the www and no0b website owners throwing tables all over the place. Note to Microsoft: Please, get rid of the scrolling.

Is Microsoft trying too hard to be different and unique? Video action after the break…

VZW Having LTE Issues?

  • April 27, 2011 8:01 am

We’re seeing reports of a nationwide 4G/LTE outage on Verizon’s network. We don’t have any LTE hardware to test currently, but again, the reports are popping up across many different forums and websites. Whatever the cause may be, hopefully Verizon can get things back in order ASAP.

Ironically, this nationwide LTE meltdown comes just one day after Verizon claimed the ongoing LTE rollout was going great and far better than expected. It appears everyone has growing pains at some point.
