Samsung Announces 16 Megapixel CMOS Sensor For Mobile Devices.

Camera phones are about to get a lot more serious thanks to the new Samsung made S5K2P1 CMOS sensor that packs a whopping 16 megapixels of resolution. Though as we’ve told you many times before, sheer resolution isn’t everything. As such, the S5K2P1 features a back-lit sensor for (in theory) better low-light performance. On top of that, this gigantor chip will shoot native 16:9 video at 60fps meaning mobile video buffs should be more than tickled too.

The hardware is currently sampling and should hit mass production by the end of 2011. 2012: the year of the 16 megapixel phone. Crazy.
