Review: XtremeMac Tuffwrap iPhone 4S Case

iPhone cases are a dime a dozen. Save for a few different designs and patterns, they all share the same basic shape. Xtreme Mac’s Tuffwrap sings a different tune, however, by featuring a unique layer that changes color with heat. The image above looks cool enough. But how well does it actually work? Jump inside to see if the Tuffwrap’s greatest feature (to change color) is marketing gimmick or real-world trick…

The design of the Tuffwrap is about as simple as it gets. The material feels good in the hand — neither too grippy to where you have to worry about fuzz loss in your pockets nor too slippery. The soft-ish material is, to us, the perfect combination.

Drop protection on the Tuffwrap is overall good save for the entire front screen area. Obviously, since it lacks any type of cover the screen is prone to face fist damage/cracking/obliteration.

As for the Tuffwrap’s marketed ability to change color with warmth, we’ll say this is more gimmick than anything. Under normal usage conditions of holding the phone (even long gaming sessions where our hands got rather warm), taking in/out of pocket, and just about every other scenario, we never once saw any type of color change. We had to physically work to get the desired affect by rubbing our finger back and forth quickly for a solid 20 seconds.

Conclusion

The Tuffwrap is a good case. It’s simple, clean, and comes in a variety of colors. The advertised color changing properties aren’t all they’re cracked to be, though, so don’t go basing your purchasing decision solely off of that one feature. With all that said, $29.99 is a tad towards the high side of simple sleeve cases if you ask us. Nonetheless, if color changing isn’t your primary concern, the Tuffwrap is a decent case.
