360 Panorama App Now Available For Android!

  • November 22, 2011 10:25 am

We’ve been big fans of Occipital’s “360 Panoramic” for iOS since day 1, the reason being because it’s drop dead simple to use and produces amazing results. And now Android users can join in on the phone. The one-handed, auto-stiching, social app can now be had for $0.99. And yes, 360 still puts Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich’s pano-shooting abilities to shame.

iPad 3 Retina Display “Confirmed” To Be In Production.

  • November 22, 2011 6:26 am

Thinking about snatching up an iPad for the holidays? We must urge you to wait. If there isn’t some insane deal and you’re ok with going a few more months iPad-less, something much better is around the corner with the iPad 3 according to DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim (via: Cnet).

While hardware such as processor (possibly a quad-core) and GPU are likely shoe-ins for upgrade, the biggest spectacle will be the (still rumored) retina display featuring a gargantuan 2048 x 1536 resolution. To keep supply in check with demand, Apple will reportedly source panels from three display makers: LG, Samsung, and Sharp.

In other iPad related news, rumors of a ~7-inch Apple tablet continue, though no firm details are known. Personally, we could care less about a 7-inch tablet if there’s a 9.7-incher floating around with 2048 x 1536 resolution. You?

iOS 5.0.2 Delayed Because Of “Address-Based Memory Leaks”.

  • November 22, 2011 5:36 am

Rampant battery drain isn’t Apple’s only problem with iOS 5. It appears that even after many weeks of public exposure, Apple still has their hands tied up with their latest mobile OS. iOS 5.0.1 failed to fix many of the battery issues a number of people are seeing. iOS 5.0.2 was rumored to finally remedy said issue and hit the market sometime this week. As it stands now, iOS 5.0.2 is still at least a week away.

The delay, according to Macerkopf.de, has to to with “address-based memory” errors. (Read: Applications aren’t releasing memory back to the phone, and in turn other apps, once they are closed.) We can confirm this memory issue first hand. A quick trip to the “Diagnostic & Usage” section deep within Settings.app shows a long, long list of “low memory” errors (see above).

Hopefully Apple can get all their ducks in a row and get the increasingly important update out the door asap. Still, despite the apparently wide-scale issues pertaining to battery life with iOS 5, uptake of the iPhone 4S is still staggering with daily stock sell-outs at Apple and carrier retail stores.

Rumor: Next Gen iPhone To Feature Much Hyped 4″ Display But No Teardrop Shape.

  • November 21, 2011 1:01 pm

In direct contrast to the late Steve Jobs’ wishes, the next iPhone will (finally) feature a larger 4″ display. The added screen size will reportedly account for a nearly 8mm longer casing, according to iLounge.

While the larger screen rumor lines up with previous rumors stating the same thing, iLounge is putting a different twist on rumors pertaining to the physical design. Specifically, iLounge’ source say that because of the added screensize and (likely) inclusion of LTE, the next-gen iPhone’s battery has to be as big as possible to keep battery life in check. If Apple were to use a design similar to the tear drop mock-ups that have circulated around the internet over the last ~year, a ton of potential battery space would be lost to tapered edges.

If anything is certain, it’s that iPhone rumors never cease.

Sony Announces Vodafone Partnership For European PS Vita 3G.

  • November 21, 2011 12:43 pm

U.S. PS Vita owners have but one choice — AT&T. It appears European owners will have fate/option as well (at least for now) as Sony has officially spilled the beans on their European carrier partners for the European bound PS Vita. Vodafone will be the “preferred partner” for the near-term which seems to point to a potential second, third, or more additions in carrier support later on down the road.

The list of European launch countries under Vodafone’s reach include: UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand and The Netherlands (SFR in France).

Pricing for the PS Vita 3G will be €299.99 (£261), with the WiFi-only version going for €50 less at €249.99 (£217). Any potential monthly/one-time fee for 3G service hasn’t been divulged. Also unknown — whether or not the initial batch of 3G PS Vitas are tied to Vodafone permanently or will have the option to be unlocked and roam to another carrier at some point in the future.

For fans of Sony’s mobile gaming platform who want the ultimate mobility by way of 3G service, how is the PS Vita shaping up for you?

Verizon Eyeing Global LTE Roaming Partners For Canadian And Western European Markets.

  • November 21, 2011 12:09 pm

LTE is a GSM based technology meaning (in theory) we should be able to roam amongst LTE networks across the country, and on a larger scale, the world. Unfortunately things aren’t so easy. The various LTE markets popping up around the globe are making use of an increasingly diverse number of frequencies, meaning hardware support has to added by way of additional radios. It doesn’t take a genius to then realize that only so many radios can be crammed into a phone. With that said, certain carriers/frequencies are close enough that true LTE roaming will be possible.

Verizon is looking to finally enter the world of GSM/LTE roaming as made evident by a new job posting seeking a “Manager of Global LTE Roaming”, specifically singling out Canadian and European markets. But before you go jumping for joy at the thought of real LTE roaming, we most point out that any actual LTE roaming agreements won’t reach the end user until late-2012/early-2013…
